The client will probably proceed with the breeding and sell them on the side of the road with a big cardboard sign:

"PURBREAD PUPPIES FOR SALE!"  Because that's how ignorant some people are and yes I purposely spelled purebred the way I saw it spelled on a sign recently.  These were "chiwawa" puppies.  I kid you not.

I'm currently so fed up with irresponsible dog owners.  I feel sorry for any Vet or vet office employee who has to try and respond to this type of question.

Me, too.  As someone who volunteers a lot for our local humane society, I see too often the result of the amazing ignorance and irresponsibility of pet owners in this community.  Along with feeling sorry for vets and their staff, I feel sorry for the shelter staff and front-line volunteers who have to deal with the kinds of people we're talking about.  That's one of the reasons I volunteer "behind the scenes."  I'd probably get in trouble for saying something I shouldn't to some of the people who go there wanting to leave an unwanted dog or cat

I saw a hand-painted (misspelled) sign on the side of the road today for CKC Yorkies. I'd add further to this discussion, but I've reached my quota on how much stupidity I can process in one day. Okay, maybe I didn't...I can't tell you the number of people here who think that their dogs can't "get worms" if they're on concrete, as opposed to being in a pen on the grass. And by worms, I mean any kind of worms...intestinal worms, heartworms...hell, they probably think earthworms lol. I always think, "Yes, concrete is a natural dewormer. I feed my dogs bags of Quick-Crete monthly."

On the other little board I moderate several years ago had a gal who posted wanting "help" with breeding. She was apparently "challenged" somehow so her parents had set her up out in the country with a little house and a huge fenced in yard. Then they bought her a "pair" of each -- german shepherds, rotties, small spaniels, and I think it was doxies. So she could "go in business" and raise dogs to sell. So everyone was intact, and all were "outside" ... and she "caught" a rottie "doing" a spaniel, and all the females were in heat at the same time (or pretty much after the "alpha bitch" as will happen in a "pack";) -- and she was all upset because why didn't they have the sense to "do it right" and mate "like they SHOULD" --i.e., spaniel with spaniel, rottie with rottie, etc. Aside from half the world wanting to flay her alive for stupidity, at this point she had 4 bitches ALL pregnant with g*d knows what/which and I finally convinced her to get ALL of them speutered. Males AND females cos they weren't EVER going to "do it right" just leaving them together. And I convinced her that the doxie that got knocked up by the rottie might not live thru the pregnancy ..., etc. so she did have it done right away. *sigh* But it was a whole FAMILY that put her up to this ... none of them having a clue that this wouldln't just go "good" and have her a nice little income for ever just for "letting them do it". I was completely blown away by the stupidity of this family (who were supposedly trying to provide an income for this gal who probably shouldn't even have been living alone. I learned then -- why do they call it "common sense" when it's so incredibly UN-common? And the vast majority of people haven't one small clue about dog health -- nor do they understand why they should. And then I think about the fact that these people have children .... and it just gets more sad from there.

 Reminds me of a family friend whose son had 2 dogs- brother & sister.  He couldn't understand how the female got pregnant because they were seperated while she was in heat- AT NIGHT, but they were left together during the day.

In my experience, people doing real tight linebreedings or inbreeding who know what they are doing don't talk about it with a normal vet.

Yes, I doubt Elhew kennels consulted a vet on their breeding program.  Some of the best pointers come from that line.

I've got a friend planning a pretty close linebreeding (not quite an inbreeding).  This is something she has been "working on" for a long time, meaning it is several generations of dogs in the making, and the reason for the linebreeding is to eventually cross out to another dog (so the linebreeding will eventually be diluted), so she also has a generation or two planned for the future.  But these are lines she has lived with and titled for quite some time as well as working with a mentor that has been breeding and training these dogs for decades and is known and respected worldwide.  She seems to know what she wants and how to get there.  Too often I think inbreeding is not well thought out or part of a long term goal, but a result of convenience (people breed the dogs they have and those dogs happen to be related, they aren't crossing out to dogs on other continents or freezing semen for 10 years) or just plain ignorance ("I didn't think the 9 month old male puppy would tie with his mother/sister!";).
