    Visit to Chiropractor

Between 1965 and 1986, I was rear ended 4 times and hit head on once, and have had upper/middle back and neck and left shoulder problems for years.  Back in early 80's I even had a home traction deal, but i don't know what bcame of it.  I seem to remember someone borrowing it and not returning it.

Well, a couple of yearsago I started to have trouble with my lower back and left leg.  Some days no trouble, other days by the time I walked from bedroom to livingroom I had to sitdown because the hip and back of my legwereburning like on fire.  And it was happening more and more often and hurting worse.

after my heart failure in March, the surgery for stents and pacemaker, I hadhome nursing and home therapist after I got out of rehab.  They both told me they thought my hip/leg was caused by pinchedsciatic nerve and I needed to go see a chiropractor.  The one I went to was the one reccomendedby thespinal surgeon who did hubby's lower back surgery almost 3 years ago, his neck surgery 2 years ago.  He is the best in this area, so trustedhis judgement.

Thechiropractorgot my entire medicalhistory and i went in 2 weeks ago yesterday and he took x-rays  Said I had one totally shot disc in my neck, but the rest of my discswere"beautiful"  Right betweenmy shoulder blades my spinecurves to theright, and downlow it isout of lilterand the sciaticnerveis pinched.  He said Medicare will only pay for 12adjustments--they also do not pay for the first visit nor x-rays, so i had to fork out $150right then.  Well, he did myt lower back, no problem, my neck, no problem, but when he did my back for the area between my shoulder blades, I thought he had crushed my chest.  It HURT like blazes, I couldn't breath nor speak and my first  thought was he had smashed my pacemaker or dislodged it or something.

He apologized all over the place and said my ribs had shifted but my spine hadn't and that caused a "sprained rib or two".  Never heard of a sprained rib before.  Said it would hurt 2-3 days so we would hold off any more treatments til it didn't hurt.  Well, two weeks later--I still hae trouble getting out of bed or up from chair, chest and left side hurts if I sneeze, cough, take a deep breath, laugh, etc.  My sister said she thinks it is either a case of bruised ribs or cracked rib or 2, and I am inclined to agree.

I am planning on going backto have him work onmy lower backand neck, but no more work onthe rest of my spine.  I noticed a little improvment on hip/leg with just that one adjustment.  I need to be able to walkto get proper exercise, so something has to be done. and no surgery unless there is no other way.  The blood thinner I am on is Effient and instructions say toavoidsurgery if at all possible.

Sandra -- welcome to MY life. When you said "lower back and left leg" I thot SCIATICA!!!

The right chiro will help you enormously. The wrong one can be the worst thing ever. Talk to people and find out who other people think is good. You don't necessarily have to go back to this guy. He should transfer your x-rays to someone else if you so choose. And I'm not at all sure what Medicare pays but not paying for an initial visit doesn't sound right to me.

It's subluxated somewhere -- and darned inflamed now. I can tell you what will help **some** -- send someone to the health store and get either wintergreen oil or peppermint oil -- not food flavorings but the essential oils. Have your hubs rub just a couple of drops in where it hurts (and have him massage it in all along where the muscles go -- because now you've got muscles trying to compensate for what hurts which makes MORE of you hurt).

I'm going to PM you -- if you'll send me your snail mail address I will send you a bottle of the oil *I* like so much. It's really helpful.

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body -- when it gets pinched it feels like you got horse kicked in your butt (*and the danged horse left his FOOT there!!*) -- then you feel a burning pain down the back of your leg to your knee -- at the knee it will make an abrupt turn to the outside of your leg and the pain will go down the outside of the leg to your foot and from there it can make all sorts of pain. But sciatica is weird -- sometimes you get one part of that without the other -- you can feel the pain in your foot and NOT the pain in your upper leg! Or -- you may be totally incapable of lifting your leg like to get in the car. Sciatica is no fun at all. Been there ...
