I got the willies! Saturday chat

DH gets up early, before the sun comes up, to go to work. He always lets Rupert out before he leaves. He just called me and said that this morning, he opened up the door to let Rupert out, and Rupert immediately put his nose up in the air. His tail dropped and he sneaked quickly back into the house. DH didn't make him go out; he knows I let him out again in a few hours when I get up.

He said that he went out in the dark to get on his motorcycle. We don't have a garage so he parks it under the back deck. He takes a minute to start up his motorcycle and put his lunch in the bag strapped to his bike. He heard something behind him, but couldn't see because the motorcycle headlight was facing the other direction. He felt like something was stalking him. He knew it was really close. It growled, and air snapped, then ran away.

He told me to let Rupert out (now that it's a few hours later and light out!) and see what he does. So I did, and Rupert's nose immediately went to the ground. He stood in one spot and sniffed for a long time, then moved to another spot and sniffed that for a long time. He sniffed all around the van, and all around under the deck.

I'm totally creeped out! There is only one loose dog that comes in our yard, very infrequently, and he's a nice golden. The neighbors through the woods on the side have a bunch of meanish American bulldogs that are usually not tied up, but they have never come into our yard. Plus you know when they're out because they bark a lot. DH assumes it was a wolf.

Yikes!!!   That made me forget what I was going to say.  Stay safe from whatever was prowling around.

Good boy Rupert. Could have been a coyote too. Freaky.

We are selling beer tonight at a mma fight for a fundraiser. So not my idea of fun but I have to do my part I guess.

A friend came by last night and helped me make curtains for my litter trailer. I'm so excited. I realized though that I totally fail as a woman. I had no clue how to make these curtains and as I watched my friend sketch them out, measure fold iron pin and sew I was thinking wth somehow I missed this gene. After she showed me how to help I did but I totally felt inadequate lol. Usually I am figuring out how to wire things, build things or fix things or whatever but I am never sewing.

It is so crazy humid here that everything in the house feels damp.

Julie, I don't think of it as being a failure as a woman but rather as being more interested in some things than others.  Sewing always seemed so boring to me when I attempted it way back when I was young.  All of my aunts were talented seamstresses but I must have taken after my mom because she couldn't sew either.  I was always happier outside making something from junk than staying inside.  :)

DH is outside mowing and trimming.  I'm cleaning the house.  I've got the better job since he's melting from the heat and humidity.  The grass and plants and weeds have grown like crazy since that big rain we had last weekend.

I've got a volunteer orientation meeting today.  I don't know whether I'm going to get along with this group but we'll see.  They help out retired military working dogs.  I'm supposed to help man a booth at a tatoo convention in a few weeks.  lol  I'm so not into tatoos but it should be entertaining in a freaky sort of way.  I'll have to try and keep a neutral expression on my face. lol

Good gracious Jano! At least Rupert was smart enough to go back inside - B would have been in full hunt mode Zip it!

Oh Julie I understand how you feel but I don't feel like that any longer. I don't have any interest in sewing or lots of other 'womanly' things. But then again I am happy to have spent an hour this morning cleaning out the gunked up, worm filled fountain - which would repulse DH. He's happy to go to HomeGoods and pick out new pillows for the couch, while I am in the dog toy section LOL

What a neat organization to volunteer for Jackie - minus the tattoo booth LOL

I have a ton of cleaning and shopping to do but I had such a long week and was up and busy early today I already feel a nap coming on. I think I'll take a nap and then get going on stuff

Please don't label yourself that way -- you're good at what *you* are good at (and I couldn't do 1/16th of what you do, trust me!) -- I'm good at what *I* am good at (I can do hand-work better than anyone but I hate using a sewing machine and I can't even spell "surger" LOL). To this day my mother considers me a 'failure' because I work outside the home and don't "stay home and 'take care of' my husband!. You're just great at being you and the really incredible thing is you are multi-faceted enough to have friends who aren't just carbon copies of you so you can get together and help each other.

Jackie -- it's humid here as well. We did Give Kids the World and altho it wasn't hot an "hour" was THE MAX the dogs could do even in the shade at 8:30 a.m.

Bunch of real animal lovers today -- and there were two different kids who were very difficult and Luna was an absolute STAR!! She will stand, rock-solid and allow a sick but "rough" or "difficult" child to do anything as long as she knows David and I are there to contain it.

I think I'll start a thread - don't want to bore anyone here. Hope you all have a great Saturday

I caved in and helped DH with the lawn and trimming.  Good grief it's hot already outside and we started at 8:30. The coral honeysuckle was about to take over the house.  There were tons of wasp nests so we had to be careful.  We have a tennis racket looking thing that zaps insects with an electrical charge and had it at the ready.  Luckily we were able to avoid being stung but we did have to zap a few wasps.  I don't like to kill them but sometimes it's got to be done.

I would love to take a nap right now but need to hop in the shower and leave soon or I'll be late.

Karen, I can take some pictures at the tatto convention for your amusement.  Wink

Jan, could it have been a raccoon?  They make weird creepy growling noises and lurk in the dark.

Janice, I'd be so freaked out!  I'd be outside hanging motion-activated lights around the entire perimeter of my house today if that happened to me!  Yes, I'm a bit paranoid.  I wonder what the heck it was???  Rupert was wise to stay indoors.  Ruby's like Bugsy -- she'd have gone right out to investigate.

Count me in the "non-sewing" group.  I use a seamstress near my office when I need things altered.  I'll sew on buttons, but even then I do a poor job.  Karen, that cracked me up when you said your DH would be in the pillow section of HomeGoods.  My DH gets lost in the kitchen aisles -- looking at special pots/pans, knives, etc. is heaven for him.

Gorgeous day here -- expected temps in the 70's, plenty of sun (and we never have humidity).  Ruby and I are heading out shortly for a walk with my friend, then we'll be doing a lot of yard work today.  Got some plants to get in the ground and LOTS of weeding.  They grow overnight, I swear.

Ruby had her first agility class yesterday.  DH said, "Well, it must have gone well because neither of you came home with any injuries."  It's not a formal type of class -- just basic introduction to some obstacles.  Ruby did great.  She'll do anything for treats, so once she saw someone at the other end/side of the obstacle with treats, she zoomed right over or through it, no fear.  The hardest part was keeping her focused -- she was way too interested in the zillions of mole holes/trails in the field, and pulling me all over the place trying to get to other people's bags where the treats were.  But she definitely had fun, so that's good.

Yikes Jan!! That creeped me out just imagining what it might be. I hope you're able to figure it out. Not knowing would bother me.

Tracy - Shane was the same way at the agility practice but he had fun and I'm glad Ruby did too.

This morning was my nephew's HS graduation. It started at 9, but we left at 8:30 and still had to park 2 blocks away. The HS is only a mile from the house, so we could've walked but it would've been tough for my FIL, especially in this heat. There was 560 graduates and I thought they'd never get through the names. It was done at 11 but the family wanted to wait to take pictures, so I said I'd walk back to rescue Shane from his crate. I'd worn what seemed like comfy but cute shoes but about 1/2 way home, they started killing me. I wanted to take them off and go barefoot but the ground was too hot, so I just kept moving. When I got home, I found that I have a huge blister on one toe and another huge one on the ball of my foot :(.

I think I'm going to take a nap and then I need to get some cleaning and more packing done.

ROTFL at myself --- Jackie, when I read what you said I thot "wow -- a whole convention about dog ID tattoos?? Who would have thot ... er .... no, she meant human tattoos -- " (still trying to wrap my head around a convention for THAT??? LOL)

It's been an expensive week again --

5 weeks ago a piece blew off the air conditioner and damaged part of it and I lost SIX containers of freon (read = $600 just for the freon?) and then I've been griping about husband trying to play Mr. Plumber? He never did get it right. Wed we came home -- air not working right. AT THE SAME TIME my husband finally admitted the plumbing stuff was beyond him (yay!) and let me call the repair guy.

Compressor on the air conditioner was cracked but under "fixable" warranty -- the unit is like 6 years old so some of it is still under warranty. That got fixed but another part of it needs repair but no huge deal.

Repair guy crawls under the house (typical Florida house built on concrete pilings with siding to the ground = snake heaven) and locates the blockage. Cracked sewer pipe (today it wouldn't be "code" so they have to replace the cast iron with PVC anyway) but despite the fact that he has to come back to replace that MY TOILETS FLUSH WELL AGAIN!!!

Let me have a little party?? It has felt like everything was breaking at once .... having the air work and the plumbing working just feels like the biggest reason to celebrate EVER!!!

Cathy, you got good advice regarding the oven.  It it was going to crap out, it would have waited until you were in the middle of a big Thanksgiving family dinner.  Now you'll have a nice big new one, under warranty.

Weather is great right now (high 80s, breezy) but the weather report showed the whole valley being under a fire watch over the weekend.  That combination of heat, wind and no humidity is a killer when it comes to wildfires. I really want to go to Costco and I really want to go to IKEA but I really, really do not want to get in the car to drive anywhere. I need one of those star trek teleporter thingys so I can just materialize wherever I want to be. Big Smile

Jan -- I kept meaning to say -- that sounds like something out of a Stephen King novel. creeped ME out thousands of miles away! Good boy Rupert!

    fuzzy_dogs_mom

You make me think, Joyce -- down here where they tear down a house to build a new one in the same spot just so it's "new"?? And new builds that go further and further and FURTHER out of town so you have to drive an extra hour to get to your home in the outer limits?? LOL

One of the big selling points they often throw in to a "brand new house" sales pitch is that if you buy THIS weekend they'll include a "free package of all appliances!! Brand new stove, fridge, microwave ..."

*raising eyebrow* -- first off, does anyone *really* think they're really "giving it away" (when they've added that into the smoke & mirrors of their "profit";) it always makes me want to say "so -- you want me to pay in my 30 year mortage for these cheap crapo appliances YOU picked for me because the cost isn't really FREE it's just "included"?? No -- just give me a cash DISCOUNT and we'll talk!!"
    • Gold Top Dog
Callie - you are so right about the cost of appliances factored into a 30 year mortgage and yet people don't think about it that way or they don't care. Even I don't always consider the reality but because of the way my dad was and what he taught me, I think about it more than most people.

My poor SIL stopped by unexpectedly. She really wanted to see DH (her big brother) but mainly needed a shoulder to cry on, and i mean that literally. I'm sure her son's graduation probably added more stress to what her and her soon to be ex are going through and she just needed to have a little meltdown. Shane is usually amped up and overly excited with company but he must've sensed she was upset and just curled up at her feet. I told her our guest bdrm is available if she needs it but she's determined to pull off a huge graduation party tomorrow, so I offered to help with that. Unless you've gone through a divorce or been close to someone going through one, you really can't appreciate how heartbreaking they are. :(

    • Gold Top Dog

Jan that gives me the creepies too, even though I know that in most cases the animals are really more afraid of us than we are of them. Good boy Rupert for just alerting something was there and not taking off after it.

I had to reread Jackies post, as I thought the same as Callie when I first read it.

Tracy that's pretty typical of all dogs when they start out with agility and that's what most starters classes are, just learning some obstacles. The fact that Ruby willingly did the obstacles is a big plus. Many dogs are nervous and it takes them awhile to get the confidence, to do some of the different obstacles.

Cathy ouch to the blisters. They are no fun to have.

Party party Callie for all things being fixed.

Cathy it nice that your SIL had someone's shoulder to cry on, even if her big brother wasn't there. I'm sure you filled the spot just as well, or even better with it being woman to woman.

Had a hot and humid day at our agility trial. We qualified in one of our courses we need in order to go to Nationals. Had a really nice run in one of the other courses as well and qualified in that course as well. Took second in the first one and third in the second one. Fun time, even though the heat and humidity was bad. Tomorrow it is looking like storms though...not fun.
