    Thursday chatting

I don't see a thread started but this is usually the time one gets going. Don't bite my head off if one gets posted at the same tim because I did check! Anyway, we have probably had about 6" of rain at least in the past 2 weeks. Floods every where including my yard. Crazy about that explosion in TX My nieces are coming to stay this weekend so I need to find something for us to do. They are teens and tweens now so it is not like before when they were happy with easy little kid stuff. Now I have to get creative. They are fun though and we always have a riot. Last sSunday we were having sit up and push up contests. They easily beat me and laughed at my girly push ups. The oldest can do the full push up thing with a hand clap on the up swing. I could hate her for that lol

    hahahaha

we were supposed to get rain overnight and didn't - we could use some to wash away some pollen.

Was really pleased when one of the neighborhood veterinarians saw B & I walking last night and he said he thought B was looking much better!

He wound up doing a total of 1.5 miles or so yesterday.Did a mile this morning. He is so much healthier mentally when he gets out and sees the world

DH is doing some training in Nags Head the next two days. Paradise

Busy today but thinking if the weather is nice this evening I might take B downtown for pizza.

The explosion in TX is horrible. I am hearing that they are looking into a cause and it might not be innocent. Sad

I am also dismayed that a) the gun law changes didn't pass. I am so disillusioned with people. and b) NC (Republican led now) is trying to pass a BSL. The Republicans have lobbied successfully over the last few years to block a puppy mill law but are now going to legislate against 'aggressive' breeds. NC has such a horrific problem with mills, overpopulation and horrible useless shelters and instead of dealing with any of that they do this. Sad times we are living in

The sun is shining and work beckons.

It's raining buckets here. Thankfully a friend sent me an awesome new umbrella and matching waterproof tote bag recently so I and my lunch didn't get soaked. Big Smile

Julie, I saw Lies' post on FB about the flooding in her area.  Yikes!   I agree with you about it being hard to find things to do with kids that age.  I can't imagine doing a physical competition with anyone that age. lol  I'd win because they'd be laughing so hard at my efforts.

Karen, I'm so glad B is doing better and I sure understand how hard it can be to measure his progress from your perspective.

The fire and explosion in West is just horrible.  Thank goodness it didn't happen during school hours, if it's true, that there was a school destroyed from the explosion.  I can't imagine how the first responders who weren't hurt or killed must be feeling right now.  This is such a small community and everyone knows everyone.

The weather here is miserable but we're supposed to get a break today with a cool front.  This morning it's mid 70's with humidity in the upper 90's.  yuck.

If you expect rain, rejoice. We are looking at 3 to 7 inches of heavy wet white stuff this evening. We may extend the length of the Possible Snow Season this year. Uff da!! Cold enough for ya? I actually put the really cold weather gear in the closet and took a couple of coats out of the truck.

The West explosion looked terrifying. Here in farm country, you see the results of dust explosions in elevators. I imagine an explosion in a fertilizer plant is worse.

I watched a big chunk of the senate hearing and vote yesterday. Why are these people not working on a budget or world peace or job creation?

Good flipping question Doug! I think we know the answer though. World peace doesn't pay for elections, the nra does.

Isn't that the truth.  I'm all for gun ownership and honestly I don't think gun registration laws will stop anyone intent on killing someone but I also don't believe that it's all a big plot to take away our 2nd ammendment rights.

Yay, the front moved through and it's cooler and we had a little rain too.  :)

So so sad about West, Tx.   I grew up in a small town, and I remember we had a gas explosion at a gas station.  Nothing like something of this magnitude but it makes my heart break for the entire town.

This is just turning into a sad, sad week all around.

My Mom's in surgery (and she's 87) right now up in Jamestown, NY.  Hopefully they can repair this hernia laproscopically & they don't have to do the more complicated surgery. Both my folks are fiercely independant and won't hear of me coming home for something like this.  "Worry" is right beside me  today.  *sigh*

Snow. Big, heavy, thick, ugly, white snow. Couldn't see across the street for a couple of minutes. My wife just left to volunteer in Mankato. Wife just called. She has freezing rain and sleet. Spring time in Minnesota. Ya sure. Uff da.

It could be worse. My B-I-L lives in NDak. We get 6 inches, he get 16.

The NRA is only 5 million of the estimated 100 million gun owners. I am not NRA, I do not have an AR. I did write letters to my representatives (they ignored me). I am not going to start a rant about guns on this site. I will go start a fight on one of the gun sites (ultra conservative-a little scary) and work off some steam. They are fun to poke at.

On the plus side, Piers Morgan threatened to go back to England if we didn't pass any gun laws. Of course, they don't want him back.

Hey Julie, smack your niece for me, will ya? Wink Seriously, is it wrong to be jealous of your 5-year-old's rock hard, flat stomach?

We were suppose to (or is it supposed to?) get a few inches of snow and ice overnight. Luckily we woke up to rain. Yay!

Doug, keep the snow over there please!

Good vibes for your mom, Callie.

Both girls ended up getting sick yesterday afternoon. Willa's teacher said she wasn't acting herself after nap time, but she didn't think much of it. (Mmmkay thanks.) I got a call at 2:30 saying she had a 101 fever. Apparently she was trying to get her backpack zipped up and melted down, then the teacher realized she was sick. My poor Bean.

I went to go pick up Sonja from daycare, and she immediately said, "My belly hurts," which either means she wants attention or she doesn't feel good. I felt her forehead and she definitely had a fever, too. Sonja is so stubborn and pretty much refuses to do anything I ask her to, so she would not take some medicine. When DH came home from work, he had to help hold her down so I could squirt some ibuprofen in the back of her mouth. Sad

After the medicine kicked in, they seemed fine. They slept good and felt fine this morning. I let them sleep in just a bit, so instead of Willa taking the bus I had to drive her in. 4k and kindergarteners have to be brought in by a parent, they can't just be dropped off. So I walked her in. When I went back out to the parking lot, my windshield wipers were folded out (you know like when you pull them back to scrape ice under or wash the window?) It was really weird. I flipped them down and left. I know a few parents whose kids go there, but not very well. I think a joke like that would be done by someone who really knows you. So I was really confused and a little creeped out.

Ooooh Jan - that is kind of creepy but hopefully just a silly prank.

That explosion in Texas is heartbreaking and it's those kinds of incidents that make me worry about DH being a firefighter. They just never know what they're going to encounter. I did hear speculation that the explosion might have been attributed to using the wrong thing to fight the original fire with. I hope that isn't the case or there will be a lot of finger pointing and guilt.

I spent almost an hour on the phone with Verizon's fraud dept. this morning. I'd gotten some text msgs saying an order for new phones had been placed and then one saying our address had been changed. Someone in Philadelphia was trying to buy phones with our acct info but Verizon has pretty good alerts to stop stuff like that, so I'm happy about that. This is the 2nd time it's happened though and getting it straightened out is a PITA :(.

Sunny and mid to high 70s today and 80s for the weekend - woohoo!!!

Agreed.  Background checks won't stop every killer.  Speed limits don't stop all speeders.  But they might reduce the chances of a tragic event, and even if it stops only one, isn't it worth it?  If you have nothing in your background that would prevent you from being approved to purchase a gun, then I simply don't understand the need to reject such a reasonable step.

From things I've read and heard from various sources, don't a majority of Americans (even if it is a narrow margin) support background checks like the ones voted down yesterday?  Aren't politicians elected to represent the voices of the majority of people in their constituencies?  It's really discouraging how so many of them only do what it takes to preserve their political careers, instead of genuinely advocating for what the majority of people would like to see happen as a compromise.  It's like this for many, many political issues, not just things related to gun control.  Sigh.

Callie, good surgery wishes for your Mom.  My Mom had similar surgery not too long ago -- the first few days post-op were a bit rough, but she came through just fine (she's in her 70's).

Very, very sad to hear about the horrible events in West, TX.  It would be tragic anywhere, but in such a small community it will probably directly affect every single resident with a loss of or injury to a loved one.  Like Callie said, it's a sad week.

Janice, the windshield wiper thing is kind of creepy!  But I'm glad the girls seem to be feeling better.  As for sit-up and push-up contests . . . Julie, you're amazing for even attempting.  I'd have to make sure my nieces had CPR training before I joined in!

All I've really managed to accomplish today is a three hour nap (it's my day off from work).

I did however, get the last part of my interview scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.  It's a 1/2 hour meeting with the VP's senior staff/direct reports (3 of them).  After that hopefully I'll hear sooner rather than later if I'm going to get a job offer.  If I do, hopefully they'll be ok with the fact I have a cruise coming up in about a month that I don't want to cancel on. I haven't mentioned it, since I felt it would be more prudent to during the job offer stage of this dance, rather than have that work against me from the get go.  Hopefully I handled that right should it come to it.

Since this is such a short meeting with those folks (meeting them all at once), I'm not sure what appropriate questions I should ask them or honestly what questions to expect to be asked.  The position I'm applying for will likely entail me supporting them as well (maybe not to the extent of providing admin. assistance to the VP), but I'm sure there will be work for them I'll be doing. This whole three step interview process is just plain new to me. First interviewed by the University's HR search team, then by the VP himself, and now a shorter meeting with his dept. heads. This has been so nerve wracking!

Okay, this is a winter storm. The wind is picking up. I was watching a Robin get blown off the bird feeder. One confused bird, wondering why he came north so early. The snow is wet and heavy and there is a lot of it. May have to crank up the truck and go bust some finger drifts tonight. Schools are closing al around us. I fell asleep in the basement and woke up to the sound of the emergency sirens going off. Test day, but we have had tornados jump over our house twice now, so I tend to hit the floor running. On a doggie note, Piper is well camouflaged in this. But so is the house.

Sharon - I've had several interviews that went exactly as the path you're on. One question that came up in one of mine almost threw me but I had some insight into the reason for the question. It was "how would you prioritize your work and requests from other people in the dept.?". I knew the person who was asking it was probably afraid that I'd be less than helpful to him because he wasn't my actual boss. I made it a point to assure him that if I wasn't sure which task (meaning the one from my boss or his) was a priority, I'd ask and that I'd always be willing to help with anyone's project. You may not get a ? even close to that, but I thought I'd mention it. I'm super excited for you!!

I've been trying to order Shane's heart meds through Costco's online system but the email help I was getting was really confusing. They were telling me I had to create an acct for him and couldn't use mine. I finally called and a really nice woman helped me through it. She told me Shane had to have his own email address but when I asked more questions, I realized that he didn't need his own email but I needed to use a different one than the one I have my acct. registered as. I guess not everyone has different email addresses but DH and I both have a few. Problem solved :)
