While this isn't a truly abnormal thing, it sounds like you have NO idea when or where he ate said bird. In my neck of the woods, there are a ton of bird carried illnesses and dogs CAN catch those.
I would take him to the vet for some blood work just to be safe.
Then, I'd keep a much closer eye on him so he isn't making inappropriate things into a snack. When you are walking him, "leave it" and "drop it" are two invaluable commands. We came across the innards of a deer over the winter...why on earth hunters are supposed to "field dress" a deer is beyond me but apparently they are SUPPOSED to leave the guts in the woods by law.....and my crew BADLY wanted those innards, but they responded to "leave it" and just stared.
Dogs are gonna be dogs, but I prefer to know that what they are eating is "fresh kill" and not something that died of an illness.
