I looked into it and decided against it. In my area at least, the amounts paid for each procedure covered are about 40 percent of the actual cost. They don't cover pre-existing conditions, many things I'd go to the e-vet for, or holistic treatment. Additionally, with most insurances cancer coverage is extra. Instead I have a savings account for the pets.

Last year I managed to spend about $3,500 at the vets. About $2,000 of that was for Floyd's mast cell tumors, including a surgery at the e-vets and consultation etc. at a holistic vet. It wasn't essential that he be treated there as he was stable and surely would have survived until after the holiday. I think for everything we had, insurance would have paid about $600 - 700 for three dogs.

Up until last year, they went through a period of being pretty inexpensive and we were able to make some charitable contributions from their account.

However, insurance can be very good if you don't have the savings account. Many vets will take payments until the insurance pays.

I don't have pet insurance, but I've looked into it. It seemed pretty ridiculous to me. Most of the companies I looked it charged pretty high fees- and then instead of just giving you an insurance card to show the vet that would cover the cost or something similar, they require YOU to pay the bill at the vet, then send in a claim and IF they approve your claim, they send you a check. That certainly wouldn't work for me- the whole reason I wanted insurance in the first place is because I probably wouldn't HAVE 2 or 3 thousand dollars to give out of pocket if my dogs needed some expensive surgery. If you already have that kind of money just laying around, why do you need pet insurance? Especially since I have yet to see a vet in my area who would do payment plans- so basically, you'd have to just pay that 2 or 3 thousand dollars on the spot, then send in a claim and HOPE they approve it and send you a check. Based on what I've heard from people who have it, they also deny ALOT of legitimate claims.

So basically, you shell out a ton of money to have your pets covered, and you're STILL most likely out of luck if you suddenly have a major emergency and don't have the cash right at that second. [&o]

But then, alot of people have found pet insurance companies that they like, I'm assuming. I've never spoken to anyone personally who had good experiences with it- but I'm sure there are people out there who use it and are glad to have it.

I talked to my vet about it when I first got Russell as a puppy and she said that if you have a very young, healthy dog, you might consider getting pet health insurance in case of some future emergency but for many people it's not going to be worth it. In MA it was about $35/mo. If I put you put that much money into an interest-bearing savings account instead, you could have a substantial emergency pet fund in a short time.

    Hiya,
I have health insurance on molly, but not on trix.
With trix we have a saving thing with our vet. I put in £10 a month and if she does need any treatment they will take the money out, this works well for us, maybe see if you can do it.
Molly, we got insurance out on her as her parents have got delicate stomachs and we didn't know if mol will be the same, I pay £6 a month for her and it covers homeopathic remedies as well as normal vet treatment, money if she gets lost or stolen (for advertising etc) and in the event of death.
With insurance it depends on age and dog breeds to how much it costs and also who with.

i dont feel insurance is necassary for my dog, makes more sense to have a "just in case savings". only if i had a dog with alot of health issues or a breed known to develop major issues would i consider having insurance.

My pet insurance company covers hereditary and congenital conditions with no dollar limits.  They let you pick your deductable and they have 3 policies to choose from.

I like it.  I pay 25/month and have had no trouble with claims.  I added the routine care for his first year and it more than paid for itself. I'll drop it once he/s one yr.
    It works for me.
