Paige -- if it's geared to "to go" as well as "eat in" no. In other words, if a server has to take THEIR time to go get the food from the kitchen on plates, and then tuck it all in "to go" boxes, assemble all the drinks, flatware, butter, and anything else someone put on their list and pack it up in boxes and bags and schlep it all the way out to a car somewhere in the parking lot in a "to go" lane or parking spot? yeah -- then I tip and I tip just like I would had they had to schlep it to my table.
But a little place where the guy putting up the food either puts it on a plate OR puts it right in wrapping paper?? And I'm standing there waiting AT the counter??? (i.e., I came in to get my own food?) -- then no -- I don't tip there. I might drop change in a jar **MAYBE** depending on how benevolent I feel and how much hassle they went to in order to please me.
But a "tip"? That's to compensate a server for all THEY did to get my food to me including having to pack it all up and assemble it. A lot of the big chains now have "to go" phones but they honestly aren't geared for "to go" -- it's all the servers who run it from the kitchen to where ever the bags and stuff are.
Servers now even have to split their tips with "food runners" -- so even if the server is AT the to go area, they still probably have to give the food runner a cut of their night's tips and drive thru tips typically suck.
I've got too many friends who are servers -- you work in the bar you make good money. To go or food running? Not so much but it's typically where everyone has to start out.
Long winded but that's my take. I'm not at all generous when I go in myself and stand and wait, go get my own drink from a fridge and stand in line?? nuh-uhhh.
