    Been keeping this quiet

Most of you know, I graduated on March 21 from Uni. Well the past couple months have been hard in the job department.. Lots of interviews but no hire. Well this past week I got HIRED! I wanted to wait until I finished training to say something, just incase things didn't work out.

The job is a wee bit different then what I set out to do. Originally I really wanted to work in the Home support sector.. Well that didn't work as planned (car blew a shock...) My main goal was to work with seniors and palliative patients.. What I ended up doing is working with people who have developmental disabilities... It's been a learning experience so far but I'm loving it!!

Congrats! You'll find it frustrating at times, I can promise you that right now. The people who do the direct care, which I am assuming is what you are doing, are so often under paid, over worked, and expected to work miracles. But, if you are in it not just for the money, and to see your clients do well, you will succeed. If you have the opportunity to teach them skills, it's a great moment when they succeed at something you've  been working hard to do, or even for some, if they cooperate in letting you do it.

I am in Direct care right now, working in the residential group homes. I'm kinda hoping to try my hand at Lifeskills training the company I work for offers. But we'll see.

Good for you!!  All my initial teaching/training was to work with developmentally disabled children.  It's a field near and dear to my heart. Congratulations!!!!

Congratulations!  These days we hear so much about people struggling to find a job.  Happy news to know someone who has found something in their preferred field.  Glad it's going well so far, and I hope you continue to find it enjoyable and interesting!

I used to teach at a residential school. I'm sure it's the same here as it is there. You are not paid nearly enough for what you do. Where I was, the day time staff from the group home would also come into the school and act at assistants in the classroom. The best staff I worked with were the ones who were dedicated to teaching the kids to do things themselves. For a while, when they were teaching them, it made the job tough, but once the kids could do it, it made the job easier. The best staff they ever sent me was the only one who could get a certain kid to do stuff other than get into trouble. He made the job look easy,  and the kid was happy to help him all day.

Congrat on the new job and graduation!

If working with developmental challenges works out for you an employment option to keep in mind is the public school system. My friend works for the Toronto District School Board in a special school they operate for children with developmental problems who often have physical problems as well and are unable to attend the main stream school system. I know a lot of the students face quite severe challenges.

The pay, unionized gov't payroll, is good and benefits and pension plan up the whazzo. Of course summers and other sundry holidays off. I'm sure BC have very similar schools in their system.
