has anyone ever had anything like this happen to them, or heard of it?

i see an ad on craigslist. it says... i dont want to do this, but i have to give up my puppy because of more hours at work. aisa is a gsd/boxer mix. she is utd and comes with her collar, leash, and crate. so.. text and ask her some questions. i ask about a rehome fee. she says 50 dollars. okay, not a problem. i tell her, i am getting the money off my paycard, so it will be a bit, but i will come over. she wants me to meet her at her moms house. so, i show up, she seems a little thin. not alarming thin. nothing to go nuts over.. just a little. after a bit she tells me she bought her from petland.... so now looking closer to make sure im not getting a very sick puppy with vet bills as high as the sky. man, shes a stong and good looking pup! could fill out a bit, but who knows, maybe her gangly stage? im told she has a pit at home that asia plays with. so... after a bit, i decide, i think she will work out. thats when she says, welllll, i didnt bring her crate or her vet records. so you can pick her up in a couple of days if you want. well, im not giving you $50 and not walk away with the pup. so i leave with her. im told in a couple days ill get her stuff. i ask her, who her vet is, i can get her records from them myself.. and she admitts that she never took her to a vet. she was utd till shes 6 moths when she got her. she can give me that. after her telling me times that she would back out of again and again, she finally sent me a text, come get her stuff from my moms now. i am leaving to bathe my kids if your not coming now. so i go and get a rather nice crate thAt has poop stck to it... gotta clean it before using it. and a paper from vet stating she is healthy for petland to sell her. no vet record. i call petland asking about her and how they do these things. im told, they only vaccine enouph to make them legal to sell. they dont do any extra. the owner is advised to take them to a vet right away to get shots started. and that the pup would be chipped. i have to get the former owner to write me something saying that she has turned her over to me. other wise, if something happens, and that chip is run.... she can take the pup. what? realy? all my dogs are chipped anyway.. but come on, this is just crazy. ill be making an appointment for her to get her shots. trying to get all in line. and just hope she will help me get her in my name, like she said she would after just texting her about it. but dang... this has been about a ride. asia is worth it. shes a realy good dog. but it would have been nice to not have made this so difficult, and i dont like being lied to. so, just wondering if anyone has been through anything like this?

Sounds like an odd situation. Penland gets their dogs from puppy mills btw. The pup probably is not healthy. I'd you have it already I would be getting it to the vet asap.

I've never been in that kind of situation.  I wouldn't count on the woman doing anything toward getting the microchip in your name.  Craigslist if full of scammers.  Going through a shelter or reputable rescue may be more expensive initially but the dogs are vetted and you don't have to worry about proving it belongs to you or whether the dog is vacc'd or heartworm positive. I know not all shelters or rescues are better than random promises made on CL but there's a lot better chance they're telling the truth.  I hope it works out.

Hopefully, she will help you, but I wouldn't count on it. We did get one of ours from Craigslist, but my mom and my sister got all the paperwork and the dog prior to giving the owner any money. Obviously you already have the dog and can't go back, but if anyone else stumbles upon this, get all the paperwork and the dog before you hand over money.

I'm slightly confused though. Is she actually chipped? Does Petland do that upon sale of the dog? If not, you probably want your vet to scan her to see if she has a chip. Given that the owner seems super responsible, she may not have even ever bothered to register the chip in her name at all. If you get her scanned, you can probably find out what company the chip is from, and find out if it was ever registered. If it wasn't, you may be able to register it in your name, or you could just chip her again if you wanted to. Multiple chips probably won't hurt a dog.

Based on what happens with CL posting around here, I'd say you did really well - you got the dog, for the price stated, and a few extras.  Folks who post PETS on CL are mostly scammers, especially here in RI.

yes, shes chipped. shes from their adopt program. they do get puppies from puppy mills. they wont admitt it, but they do. i dont like them for that reason. but they also take in any pets someone wants to drop off, litter that hey cant place, a pet they cant keep. they give you a small amount of money for them and then sell them for like 300. people who find out about this, will go there and get a little something for then, rather then pay the pound to take them. its messed up. i dont give up my pets, so i dont have anything to do with it. aisa was from the adopt a pet side of it. she is very strong and healthy at 4 months. but ya, when i found out she came from petland, i did a double check myself. oh, and ya, petland does chip all their dogs before leaving the store. i didnt know that till now. it took some talken, but i got her to sign a note saying she sold her to me for $50. it was enouph for petland to change her information that they have me being the owner now. however, they gave the other lady a packet with her chip info and everything. all she gave me was a paper out of that packet saying that she was fit for sale. i dont know why she didnt give me the packet. she told me when i had her sign the paper, that she never got her registerd with her chip. so now, im making asia a vet appointment right on my payday, gonna ask the vet if they can help me with any of this. just getting her switched... petland said, in order to do this i gotta get the packet from the lady... so... another frusterating call, another frusterating trip, this is crazy.... god!! is she a dog or a car? if she were a car id sell it. to much of headache! shes lucky i wont do that to a dog. shes a good girl. the wild child of the bunch for sure! oh... and found out that when you get a puppy from petland, your first vet visit and start of shots is free. that cost is already added in the money you pay to buy a pup. i realy dont get why she didnt take her. why?? i just dont understand people.... it wasnt because of cost, that i didnt adopt from a shelter. there realy wasnt a reason at all. just was looking at cl, saw her, been talken about getting one like her to ad to our family, so asked about her. i had no idea that getting a dog these days is like getting a car..... its been a while.
