rawhide?

    rawhide?

What's the feeling on rawhide here? I always use to give it to my basset, but I know some feel it's unhealthy. My mother-in-law bought some for Sadie. I'm not sure if I should give it to her or not.

I think it kind of depends on the individual dogs and how they handle it.  You could try it for something like a once-a-week treat.  I've had two dogs who got diarrhea from it so that's the reason I don't give it to Max.

The biggest problem I've had is chewing off big chunks and trying to swallow unsuccessfully. It scared me enough a few times that I quit giving them. I'm in love with bully sticks though. They're pricier but they don't seem to cause the chocking/gagging problem.

It seems she's not that impressed! I gave her 1 of those thin little sticks. Charlie would have finished it off in 10 minutes. She still has it hours later. A

But apparently a toilet paper roll is awesome!

I give Luke rawhide somewhat often, but only American made stuff. I don't trust Chinese stuff. He's been fine with it, but he never gets it when I'm not around. Although, I do give it to him sometimes when I want to go back to bed.

My dogs like them and I have never had an issue. I have 50 lb dogs and just give the little rolled sticks so there aren't any big chunks to swallow.

LOL toilet paper rolls never lose their wonderfulness Wink

I have always given my dog rawhide - I try to buy USA stuff and always avoid China stuff

He has never had digestive issues and isn't a gulper so he hasn't ever choked on any large pieces. I stick to large retriever rolled stuff

I used to give them to my dogs but after several instances of dogs trying to swallow them after they were softened by chewing and then choking on them, I stopped.  Lots of dogs have no problem with them.  They never caused my dogs any digestive problems.

We had the same experience with our previous dog -- but he was a gobbler, not a nibbler.  Also, we found that when we stopped giving him rawhides he stopped having the occasional vomiting episodes in the middle of the night.  So, we stuck with Nylabones after that, which he loved.  That's what we give our current dog, too.

I used to give Zeke rawhide, but I always watched carefully, and did have to take them away when he started tearing big chunks off and swallowing them (about 10 minutes Smile). He lost interest one day though, and hasn't been interested since.

We give Ari a lot of rawhide.  We buy USA made, natural products.  She's not a gulper and bully sticks get too expensive for us to keep up with her need to chew.  Never had a problem with rawhide with her, thank goodness!

My dogs get a lot of rawhide as well. I like to stick with the plain white ones. I have had Buddy gag on a piece but nothing serious. I find they can chew off bigger pieces from the flat chews so I tend to buy the ones that are knotted or braided.  I will also mention looking on line about dental care (Ribbon) the most recommended practice after brushing was feeding raw bones and rawhides.
