UPDATE: Maska has been eating and drinking normally. The staff at Tufts just love him (I'd wonder about their sanity if they didn't). Yesterday, he had a liver biopsy and they drained his gall bladder. He is positive for leptospirosis (horrible, but better than cancer) and is not likely to have surgery as long as the gallbladder/bile duct thing is not an issue. Last night, he did not appear to want to eat quite as well, but the tech said that it was "seconds" that were offered in the bowl that was there, so apparently he did have one ok meal. Vet called last night and said that he was slightly less icteric, so that's a positive. When I went to see him last night, I visited in the ward, instead of an exam room, because he was getting IV antibiotics when I got there. He was shaking like a leaf when I brought a chair into the kennel and sat down. I honestly thought he interpreted that as the staff having put mom in "jail" too! Pitiful. He finally relaxed and fell asleep for a while, but every time a door slams or there's some noise, he wakes up. I'm quite sure he's getting very little rest in such a noisy environment. He's used to a couch and a very low TV for background noise in the middle of two acres! My vet is very upset at him having gotten this, but we both agreed on a decision not to vaccinate him last time due to the problems he was having with allergies. We were waiting until the skin thing was under control:-( Anyway, I don't even know if the serovar that affected him is one that's prevented by the vaccine, and this area is seeing more cases of lepto that is not covered by the vax. Even after all the precautions we take around here, something may have gotten in to the swimming pool in the pen, so I hiked all of it out of there. If they want a pool from now on, it will be in the form of running water from a hose! I'm also going to treat the girls prophylactically if necessary, if the serovar is not in the vaccine they got. What a nightmare...
