Odd Question: Could My Dog Be Smiling?

Thanks. I was confused because I read in another book that when a dog's mouth is kind of curled up that there are "wrinkles" on his muzzle signifies aggression, but I know that some dogs smile, so I wasn't sure.

The Chessies look downright vicious. Ha. If I saw a dog coming at me making that face I would run up a tree and regardless of what the owner said I would not come down til the smiling stopped. [:D]
Our chow mix used to "smile" a lot, but only when he seemed to be concentrating on something. I called it his thinking teeth. Putting on his thinking teeth. He would do it if he couldn't figure out how to open something or if we were trying to teach him something. Or when squirrels would escape up trees. He always seemed to do it when he was puzzled by something. He was an odd sort of a dog though.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I went searching when I noticed Daisy reminding me of Ed's dogs.  During our nightly brishing sessions, she has started showing her front teeth to me and its so goofy looking.  Her side "lips" are totally relaxed, and she is laying down on her side or back, so it has to be that submissive grin.

I never thought about marking it and putting it on cue.  What a fun idea!  Not sure if I will use the same cue as suggested here, maybe something a bit more family friendly.  [:D]
