    rough playing

About the last week I have been having some problems with Evangeline. We have been working on NILIF, and she has been doing very good with that. She sits before I give her her bowl, she sits before she comes in the house etc. One problem I have been having is, she doesn't listen. If I call her to come to me about 60% of the time she will not respond or look at me and then walk away. Her not listening is becoming an issue. My wifes father has two dogs (both small breeds that we see frequently ), and Evangeline will start pawing at them, and running them over and biting the top of there necks ( she doesn't growl or bark when she does this). The other dogs will growl and bite at Evangeline's face, definately not having fun with Evangeline. I try to call her off by clapping my hands and calling her, and bribing her with a squeaky toy. But she will not listen to any of it. She will completely ignore me and keep bothering the other dog. Until we bring the other dog's inside. Now I don't think she is dog aggressive, buts he isn't listening to the other dog or me. I am also buying her a crate, because she is no longer listening to me when I tell her to go pee outside. How do I go about this?

If you search through old threads, Spiritdogs has an excellent method of teaching recall that basically shows the dog the treat they missed out on by not coming to you the first time you asked.

For the rest of it, I'd put this dog on a drag line in the house. Cut the loop off an old leash. That way when she doesn't listen and starts heading off to bother other dogs you can simply pick up the leash. With potty training, if she's reverting back, go back to the beginning and go outside with her each and every time--praise and reward. (ad nauseum). I don't know you but I'm guessing here that Evangeline has become a teenager. If that's the case, you will wonder if she's learned anything at all. She has, but chances are she's testing you and it feels like she's forgotten it all.

Can you talk a little about what methods you have used to teach recall and if there's any other distraction situations the recall tends to break down in?

I like to teach recall pretty much as classical (pavlov's dog style) conditioning, but it takes a good bit of time.

Thank you for your suggestions. To be perfectly honest I had no idea what recall was. So like most people I googled it, and this is what I found:   [linkhttp://www.thepetcenter.com/gen/training1.htm]http://www.thepetcenter.com/gen/training1.htm[/link]

After reading this the general idea I got was, if the dog doesn't listen the first time I show her what I wanted her to do. And if she listens I treat and praise, and if she doesn't no scolding or treats, but to just try again etc. Also without knowing what recall was. I do treat her and mostly praise her everytime she comes to me. My wife also does this.
So is the following link what I should be doing?

    Hi bryanar,

There are lots of ways to teach a good recall. Here's a thread with a few ideas:http://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=328865&mpage=1&key=really%2Creliable%2Crecall񐒡 . Search term "reliable recall" here in archives will bring you lots of threads.

I scanned the article you linked to.... yes always lots of praise for the dog coming to you.

    A couple of other things:

Select a recall word. I only use "come" when it's *really* important, other wise I use "here." You don't want to make your recall word a word that your dog learns to ignore.

In the beginning, never allow your dog to fail to come! Only call him when you are 100% sure he will comply ... this means that he is already on his way to you, or you have him on a lead, so you can reel him in and complete the command for him. This is so you don't teach her to ignore your recall word.

As far as the rough play: a trainer and I worked with Ixa to teach appropriate dog interaction behaviors. You may want to hire a trainer to help you, too. We put Ixa with another dog, and corrected her, "eh-eh", when she snarled or growled at the other dog, then praised and rewarded her for nicely sniffing, getting sniffed, and simply being a relaxed good sport. This worked to change her behavior.

With recall it is really important to set the dog up to succeed, every time. You want this to become a classically conditioned response, so the same series of events has to happen the same way every time for a lot of trials (Pavlov got his dogs to drool when he rang a bell by ringing a bell and then immediately feeding them over and over and over with no variation). This may mean curtailing Evangaline's freedom a little bit for a little while as you work on this, but it will pay off in the end with a dog you can trust giving a little freedom to under any circumstance. If she does get in to a situation in which you know she will not come when called, just go get her--do not use your recall cue word or sound.

I heard of a saying in bird-dog circles, where the dogs work at pretty far distances from their handlers and recall to a whistle to "never blow a whistle up a dog's butt". Meaning, when training for recall, don't give the cue to recall as they're running away from you. They'll ignore you and learn pretty fast that that sound you're making means nothing at all and can be ignored at will. So make this very easy for her at first. Recall and reward her as she's already pretty clearly coming towards you, do it in the house when she's 5 feet away and it's almost dinner time, do it when it's time to go for a walk and she's in the next room, but don't start right off trying to do this while she's playing with her best friend out in a big yard with birds and squirrels and dogs and smells.
