My dog eats poop - HELP

    • Gold Top Dog

All I can say is poor Annie.  She goes from a situation that was bad into one that gets her shocked and could get her killed.  I have PM'd the OP hoping she will come back for more help, if only to try to re home the dog.

Granted, her choice of mates is hers, but I find it really interesting that, on one hand, the guy trims his other dog in a nice cut, but can't "cut" Annie a break until she gets trained.  Perhaps, if he were educated about the causes, and the anxiety this poor dog must feel.

Anne, I believe that I also mentioned that the hubby needs some education.  However, everyone is not like us "tough old broads" and many women put up with much worse than what we've been told here.

Regardless, we don't get to judge.

I'm still new this Dog Community forum thing so bear with me.  Trust me, this has been a real issue for me and I will be dealing everything I can for Annie.  It is interesting that he's so into the perfect dog but the one with the problem and not perfect gets the shaft. I am angry and hurt and have anxiety myself - I will be talking about at our next counseling appt.  I found a lump on Annie's next this morning and have been freaked out all day - I just lost my old rottweiler, Riley, last year to cancer )-:     But this may be a blessing in disquise. Now I will be taking Annie to the Vet and that way I can get the lump checked and get her a blood test for bacteria to make sure something from the poop she used to get to at her old house didn't give her some sort of infection she will pass on to us or Roxy. Then I can talk to the vet about it all too. I would always try to get a new home for Annie. I put her on one website already and got no response, but I wouldn't give up. And the shock collar is more of a training collar; I use it on both dogs - I tried it on my own wrist first; trust me I was leary - I love my animals. She responded well on numer 1 and at the most 2 - it goes up to 10!!  I'll let you know if she still needs another home - thank you.  Your response was pretty harsh - like I'm being cruel to my dog; that hurts my feelings.

Thanks for caring about my dog.

I think some dogs just like to eat poop....my BC/Cattle dog mix has been eating my other dog's poop since she was a pup. If I don't pick up my dogs poop immediately, she will eat it. She has never eaten her own...just his, and now she also eats my Maltese's poop too if I don't watch her closely every time she goes out. I tried hot sauce and hot pepper flakes on the poop...she loved the added flavor...so that didn't work. She has been trained to "leave it" but that only works when I am there to give her the command. The ONLY way to keep her from eating it is to pick it up every time the dogs go out. My dogs have a doggy door, so if I need to be away for a few hours, I have to crate her just to keep her from going outside to her special smorgasboard until I can get home to clean it up. Dogs can't eat what isn't there, so just be diligent in cleaning up after each dog and never punish or yell at the dog for eating it.

Good luck ...hope your dog is ok.

LIsaKay...we are not responding to your actions.  We are responding to your concern that your husband "may kill  your dog" as per your post. Please understand that, if your original post is accurate, we are concerned about your well-being and that of your little girl dog Annie.  Sorry if your feelings are hurt, but it is preferable that you and Annie are safe.  No one is accusing you of being cruel to your dog; however some of us may be actively requesting that you seek support from local professionals that you trust  Please keep us informed and we will keep supporting you.

I'm glad that she'll be going to the vet.  Honestly, poop eating starts as pups since momma eats poop to keep the den clean.  It's possible that she's had pups at some point and her anxiety about being in a new home is driving her to keep things clean.  There are lots of possibilities and unfortunately, I'm not a doggie mind reader.

I personally wouldn't use a "training collar" but some folks swear by them.

You will come to find that we are VERY passionate about dogs and any sort of mistreatment or threatened mistreatment really sets us off.  Regardless of who is doing the threatening.

Please let us know what the vet has to say.

I don't think you are being cruel to your dog, but I also don't think you are well educated about the consequences of electronic collars, and I don't like to see dogs subjected to their use, especially by someone who is not very well versed on the concepts of operant conditioning and how their use can affect a dog in ways you might not expect.

As to your husband's conduct, we can only guess how he treats your other dog and you, but you came here telling us that you thought he would put this dog to sleep for poop eating - we are a community of dog lovers here, and, as Glenda pointed out, are generally horrified when we hear something like this.   If you are in counseling, apparently you have come to understand that there are some issues that need to be worked out, and I commend you for trying to do that in a sensible way.   Often, the way someone treats an animal is a very good indicator of how well he or she respects a partner.  So, you can imagine that we had some concern for you as well as for your dog.  I wish you only the best luck and hope your dog ends up with a forever home where she is loved and cared for, whether it's with you or another family.

Yes, I know I don't get it. He hasn't bonded with the dog.  And it grosses him out and he knows it's going to cost money to get her checked out. I don't know what he's worrried about - I do all the work with the dogs.  He says I shouldn't be all emotional with animals. He does with our other one though. Sad. But we will be in counseling soon. I know my counselor is a dog person so hopefully he'll be enlightened by another guy that understands.  And now I found that lump on her neck. .. .I am kind of freakin - just lost my Rott last year to cancer. Anyway, Annie has a vet appt Fri to get checked out; I'll talk to the vet and get her blood checked and stuff.  She's a little weirdo but I love her and plan to until the very end (-:

    Thanks.

Sounds like the same thing except mine eats hers too. Annie will stay away with a command too. I've just been cleaning it up too. I was hoping after a while she wouldn't be drawn to it. But I guess that would be like a dry drunk!!! Won't work for long.  I would love to get a doggie door, especially for the mornings, but they usually at least one of them poops in the morning. eeeewww!!!  I will see the vet with her this Fri - I want to make sure she doesn't have some kind of bacteria she can pass to the other animals, and if so what to do about it. And now she has a lump and I'm scared. - Just lost my Rott to cancer last year - so sad )-:    I still cry.  Anyway, I will keep you posted. Just sounds like it happens alot - I never heard of such a thing except dogs getting into cat poop. Weird.

     Thanks!!

    Did you try the pineapple?

    • Gold Top Dog

If I remember right, you have to feed pineapple to anyone pooping in the area?  Alll the dogs in other words.
