Still messing her kennel

    Still messing her kennel

My 11-month bullmastiff is reliable in the house but still makes a mess in her kennel. She's confined during the day to her 3-by-8 foot kennel with a safe house at one end. This is in the garage, not outside.

She pees and poos just about every time she's in there, whether it's one hour or eight. It's also where she eats, but she doesn't seem to mind at all.

Not sure how to break that habit. I can't catch her in the act, because if I'm there watching the dynamics are completely different and she won't go -- she'll just be waiting for her dingbat human to let her out instead of just sitting there watching.

    Ideas?

most dogs kept in kennel runs...will go in there. That is a plenty big space for her to feel comfy doing so. If she were crated (crate being just large enough to stand up and turn around in) she mighn't but I think the space is a bit large to expect her not to, if the need arises. Perhaps a better idea would be to rig the kennel with a door to access the outside AND inside...then she'd probably choose the outdoor portion. Kenneled dogs generally will.

I've had dogs...and do now in my Cleo, that will not pee or poop anywhere but there own yard. So if we were to kennel her someplace she'd probably hurt herself trying to hold it..so sometimes the willingness to go anywhere can be good...as long as they can get that the house is not kosher lol.

Makes sense. She's not even a year old, and, besides, she still hasn't gotten the idea that the concrete floor of the garage is part of the inside. I'm probably expecting too much of her.

Can't allow her and her sister access to the outside without supervision, unfortunately. They get barky, not to mention the digging and tearing things up.

I'm getting used to the mess as part of the daily routine anyway. If I put down a rubber mat the urine won't soak into the concrete, and I can clean it up easily. At least I know she's done eating poo ... the evidence is right there!

Can you change her kennel arrangement? Like making it smaller.

I could reduce the space, but I'm not sure I want to. It was only a couple of months ago that I started kenneling them instead of letting them romp free in the garage together. The vibe between the dogs is much better now. They're actually eager to go in their kennels, which takes some of the guilt off leaving them alone in the house. (I'm one of those people who feel guilty every minute we leave the dogs without us.)

Changing anything right now feels like rocking the boat Surprise

Also, since I first posted this thread, I've had three mess-free days. If I'm reading that right, it means she does want to avoid a mess in there but isn't old enough to hold it very long Yes. That's OK. She's growing up fast.

I would decrease the size of the kennel and if possible have a neighbor bring the dog out of its kennel to go to the bathroom.
