    getting things off the counter

We adopted Bailey last month.  He is a five year old cockapoo.  He is pretty large for a cockapoo and he can get his paws up on the kitchen counter.  The family we adopted him from had a child in a high chair and I think the dog was allowed to get things off the high chair.  Anyway, I need to break him of this.  I have trouble catching him in the act because he is up and down quickly. Any ideas?

Take everything off your counters for now.  What you don't need is for him to be "rewarded" for going there.  It's also not productive to correct him yourself - he will merely learn to go up there when you aren't around.   I prefer to clicker train the dog for being somewhere other than the counter, but some people use "snappy trainers" to dissuade counter surfers - mainly because they will not catch a paw, and the dog will not associate them with the owner.  They just snap shut and scare the dog a bit - better than him getting a bottle of medicine or a cooked chicken carcass of the counter, though.

I've also heard it might be helpful to put some tape sticky-side up on the counter and attach some empty soda cans to it (with string) -- that way, when he jumps up there, the tape gets stuck to his paws and the cans will come down with a loud crash when he hops down to the floor.  Then, he will associate the counter with scary noises, and won't associate the negativity with you in any way.

Keep the counter empty. She'll get bored if theres no "reward".

I would NOT do this - dog could get scared and really hurt themselves.

Take things off the counter - or restrict access to the kitchen.
