Help with some training difficulties
I am going to Mom's soon for 3 weeks to help her after a back surgery. The 2 yo shih-tzu boy she adopted has spent the last few months being loved, but spoiled and learning some nice bad habits. I spent 10 days with both of them here when she first adopted him, and he had some issues, but he is a...

AAh!! Gobie stop peeing in the house!!
Gobie, you are on my last nerve. Do you realize for more than 13 years now you have marked in every house we've lived in, multiple times? What machoism do you have to prove? Really? You are fed the best foods, worried over, taken care of in every way and yet you still have to be a jerk and mark in...

Acts up when I'm on phone
T-Bone is coming along very nicely with his mouthiness. He's completely stopped when I put a lead on him, etc. A simple "ah ah" when he goes for my shoe lace stops him now (way to go, buddy!) However, he FLIPS when I get on the phone. He will be laying quietly chewing a bone, sleeping...

What to do about a dog that is possessive over other dogs?
These aren't my dogs but my one dog was involved. My dog (Jack Russell Terrier mix) was trying to make friends with a dog that one of my friends brought home about 6 weeks ago. My dog is very very friendly and she loves other dogs. The dog she was trying to make friends with was a female Scottie...

Help! Dogs and cat getting along......
Hi everyone! I'm a new posted, but very thankful I found these message boards. I can tell I will be a frequent poster and hopefully able to provide some advice as well! We have two dogs, 2 1/2 yr. old mixes (we think part Rottweiler, Shepard and Chow based on their looks) and they are the love...

I love my dog, but..........
I have a husky who will be 9 years old in March. He has been with me since he was puppy. I never thought I'd be the person to say the famous quote "I love my dog, but".................... when honestly I love my dog but sometimes I'm not sure that he loves me. There have been times...

Pulling on Leash - New DVD
Turid Ruugas has a new DVD coming out on dogs that pull on lead. Tawzer Dog Videos will have it in late October. Turid has a small book on the subject, too, but I think it will be interesting to see the video.

A couple questions about Lion.... I need help!
Ok, things at my house have been going great with Lion but I do have a few concerns. First things first, he is the sweetest dog ever. Definetly a good choice to give him a home. I have just been so happy I cant even describe it. And, he is settling in to my house perfectly. I have a vet appointment...

Couldn't Have Said it Better...
From Dee Ganley's book, "Changing People, Changing Dogs"... ""Loving" our dogs does not create trustworthy companions. Commitment by a dog to his people is the result of humane training and diligent management. It happens when we wholly accept the responsibility to lead,...

How to get our terrier to take treats and other items nicely from...
The two issues are interelated. Now I wrote about my poodle running off the other day. I failed to mention his nasty behaviors started after I became pregnant. But I'll get to that in a minute. Honestly I feel we have one of the greatest terriers ever. And the problem only started a few days...

My dogs are going to kill each other :(
Our Boston Terrier has had some knee problems, and required surgery for a luxating patella (a $5,000 surgery for a dislocated kneecap). While he was recovering for the first two weeks, we sent our other dog (a German Shepherd/Pug Cross [we're not sure how this happend either]), to a family members...

Beyond Cesar Millan
This is not intended to stir any pots, just to let people know it's out there if they want to explore the other side of the argument regarding the kind of techniques that Cesar Millan employs versus the opinions of trainers and behaviorists who do not approve of his methods. This is just a site where...

"off" days?
Do your dogs have "off" days when they seem just a little more rebellious or don't want to listen when you are training or working with them? What is the best way to overcome it? I just continued asking Miley to do what I wanted her to do and gave her praise/treats when she *finally* did...

Over-eager
I've been working on Kivi's impulse control lately as I'd like to get him into therapy, but at the moment he gets a little too wired at the sight of another dog. Not wired like leaping up and down barking, but wired as in he just leans into the harness and tries to drag me over to the dog...

Apollo's playing too rough- advice wanted
Apollo has been playing really rough with these 2 female Labs. They get along great, have known each other for 3 years, lots of play bowing and body bumping and tug of war, and in general rough play (not really mouthy though)- but all 3 play like that. Lately he's been nipping them, usually in the...

handling dogs with Physical disablities
Hi I am really after hearing what people with minor and major disabilities do with handling dogs. My latest choice of dog was quite a bit formed from losing quite a lot of strength down the LH of my body, and i have not much sight in my left eye. While i still handle larger dogs, it is nice ot give them...

Leash Tug of War-need ideas
My 20 month old Mastiff throws tantrums when he doesn't get what he wants when we go for a walk he'll grab the leash, play tug of war of war with and snap/snarl, jump and grab my arms... At 120 lbs, it's getting a little old... I've tried the downs and waiting til he calms down, stopping...

"Outspoken" dogs
It occurred to me this weekend as the vet was expressing concern over Erik's decisive unwillingness to let a stranger put their fingers in his mouth that we tend to have extremely high expectations for dogs. Let me just say now that I agree that Erik doesn't get to dictate who touches his mouth...

"Reaching the Animal Mind" by Karen Pryor
For the first couple of chapters, I felt Ms. Pryor was just rehashing "Lads agaist the Wind" However in reading the book, I found strong arguments for clicker training. I've never done harsh training, and never had huge expectations so I didn't see a big need.
