Animal Cruelty
I thought it might be interesting to have a little thread about instances where dog trainers have been accused of animal cruelty. Regardless of the outcome of the cases, it's shocking to me that this would even have to be an issue, but apparently it is. The scary thing is that most people, when they...

I really wasn't sure of the best place to post this. My best friend is this mother dogs foster by the way. Its a long story: KEEP IN MIND THEY WERE TOGETHER MUCH LONGER THAN MOST MOMS AND PUPS. This is referring to a mother rescue dog that had her puppy on the street. We don't know how...

Training the Independent Breeds
Hounds, bulldogs, terriers, huskies...others with a will of their own. Anyone want to share their training tips for the "I'm not Lassie" types? I'll start - my inclination is to tell people who want to own an independent breed or supremely confident dog, to start early. I would put...

Reintroducing dogs that have fought
We're faced with a choice: Place one of our dogs for adoption or somehow reintroduce them and reintegrate the pack. Problem is, two of our dogs got in several bad fights over the course of a few days. At the end, they could not stand being in the same house. The dogs: All are fixed. One, a rescued...

Hello everyone, I just joined these forums, so I feel kind of guilty asking questions right away. Anyway, I'll get to the point (or points). I have a five-month-old female Jack Russell Terrier named Luna. We have daily walks about 40 mins long and for most of the time she heels and/or...

video-Interesting video of puppy disciplining
By my adult Leonberger, Cleo. I thought some of the behavior buffs might find it interesting and care to discuss it? It's at the very end... Other folks might just like the puppy cuteness LOL... LINKAGE HERE

Totaly New to Dogs and I Realy Need Help
Hi there, I recently realized that I need guard dog(s) to guard my farm and livestock (goats, sheep, cows, chickens and duck) After reading about dog breeds and searching around I fell in love with German Shepherds . Making the most of a very bright puppy
So, I have this puppy that is incredibly bright and LOVES to train. He is creative, confident, extremely alert, and persistent. I've been clicker training him and he is tremendously good at it and can't get enough of it. I've been doing a little free shaping with him and he is excellent at...

Laying puppies on their backs to socialize??
I've never heard this one before until yesterday. We have yet another little of pitbull puppies at the shelter. The employees are concerned that they get enough socialization. Two different people said to me that they are handling the pups and how important it is to get them to lay on their backs...

Establishing Bite Inhibition in Puppies
As a trainer, I see a lot of adolescent dogs these days with very hard mouths. It always makes me regret not having met these dogs when they were puppies, since the default behavior for them will most always be to grab things hard when they get excited. Many of them fail to make the cut as therapy dogs...

Not sure if this is the best place to put it, but it *is* dog related, sooooo...... I'm proud to announce that I'm officially a "CPDT-KA" (Certified Pet Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed) - my results came in the mail today after an interminable wait. I just want to scream it from...

6 year old chihuahua... still pooping in my house
My Chihuahua is about 6 years old. She is an amazing, lovable dog. She comes, sits, lays down and plays dead... She is a very good listener and she loves pretty much everyone. There is just one problem... She poops in the house! She always has and I have tried everything to get her to stop. She can be...

Looking for someone's opion...
So Lulu has taken up shredding her pee pad that is in her cage (it's in my pics) with her. She never did it until a couple weeks ago. Her pee pad is now in the small enclosed part of the cage and her bed is on the open side. I would leave for work at 7:30 and not get home until 4:30 so I always left...

Bored Dogs
Many times, when a dog that needs a "job" is bored, trainers and behaviorists recommend "interactive toys." So, I thought I'd post a few of my favorites, and ask you to post yours, so that our members can find one that their dog might like. Too often, trainers tell people to get...

Litter Box Training
I have a 16 wk old Maltipoo, and we're having trouble getting him interested in the litter box. It is in the laundry room, where we can shut the door, no distractions, and we put him in there and use the same key phrase “go potty” as we did outside. When we take him outside (b/c we can’t get him...

Where do they stay during the day
Where and how does everyone keep their dogs while you're at work? I have a mature rescue GSD mix and an almost year-old bullmastiff. The mix can be trusted to have the run of the house but not the puppy. Not yet, at least. I could confine the puppy to the basement, but that would mean the mix gets...
