Tongue is basically in the "can't hurt them" category.  Except for being a better than usual source of selenium and zinc, it's pretty mineral-neutral.  I just figure it up in the "snack" figures as muscle meat.  As you probably know, it's great crockpotted, and the dogs love it in biggish chunks for chewy snacks.  Make sure it's plain and not salted or brined, though.

 To correct the nutritional information on that, go to the top of the page I linked to, and put "tongue" in the search block.  It will give you a list of types of tongue meats.  I linked to raw tongue, but boiled tongue is there too.  That's how you use that search engine.  Never put "beef" or "boiled" in there because it's a lame search engine and will give you every entry that includes "beef" and "boiled", which is a LOT!

 OOhhh, I didn't know it was high in zinc and selenium. I may have to get some.... I can feed brains, so I can feed tongues too! Big, chewy chunks? The girls will be thrilled.

You should try it yourselve too it is really delicious, in tacos. yum yum

 I'm a silly vegetarian! I'm sure it is, though, with some nice spices. I'm a huge taco eater, but I fill mine with beans, grilled veggies, then the regular lettuce and salsa on top. YUM!

Big, chewy chunks?

Actually, if cooked properly (long enough), beef tongue is tender and delicious!! My mom and grandma always cooked it, boiled with onions, garlic, bay leaf for a long time (depending on size), then peeled the skin off and sliced. For the dogs, you could probably leave the skin on though. I haven't made it in a while, but it is sounding really good right now. I've never tried cooking it in the crock pot. Will have to try it. My dogs absolutely love it!!!!

Funny story.....years ago I cooked it for my (now ex) husband while he was at work (he had sworn he would never eat it). I sliced it on his plate before serving it to him. He said it was the most tender steak he ever had. I finally told him what it was...... he slept on the couch for 3 nights!!!!!! He was not happy!!!!!!

Yes, but it's really chewy raw, which is how I thought she was going to feed it!  LOL

I don't know why people freak out at eating tongue or things like kidney or brain - is it any worse than eating a chunk of leg?  I mean, of course if you are a vegetarian, but people who are normally meat eaters.  It's funny.

Now, I'd hesitate at calf nuts.  Or Rocky Mt oysters.  But, only because I've never heard of someone who said they had a way to prepare them that was just out of this world good.  And I've helped at too many castrations to overlook what they really are!  Generally they are served whole.  :P 

 My dad's favorite game to play on real "city folk" is to try and get them to eat pairie oysters. Lol.  Of course having grown up around the pairies I know what they are and refuse to eat them. But it's always fun to see the look on the people's faces when they realize what they're eating.

 I would feed it raw, more than likely. I may crock pot it, if I decided to crock pot for some reason (like if Emma had to be on steroids, again).

I try, really hard, not to cook stuff for the dogs unless I have to. I'd rather spend the time throwing a frisbee or going for a walk!
