Have you recently applied any type of fertilizer to your lawn or any potted plants he has access to?  Some dogs seem to love fertilizer and not just the manure based type.  Just a thought.

Mine are avid dirt eaters and will lie down and dig and nibble and then fight over one particular spot, just because the other one was there. It's rather comical to watch.  It's always the biggest draw after a thunderstorm. But the best vegan treat for them is by far, grass turds. They all LOVE grass turds. (those wads of wet grass that the power clumps and dumps.)

there's one place in my yard where the dogs lick at and eat the dirt. I think it just tastes good there for some reason, maybe an outcrop of salt or something. I don't really buy into the idea that animals can realize they are low in this particular mineral and somehow seek it out and eat it. You never see anemic people seeking out spinach and steak do you?

well he only did it those two times and not since - so who knows- what caused me concern was the voraciousness in which he went at it.  I know some dogs have caused themselves problems via dirt eating so wanted to prevent that

For the record once was in the yard and the other time along our walk - neither would be fertilized and were dissimilar in content although both would be clay

    thanks all

Britta, that helps a lot. I was actually thinking, the other day, about trace minerals. My older dog eats basically a homemade diet. I use Bravo ground meats and veggies as a base, then add supplements. I was thinking of adding a smidge (tiny smidge) of some sort of mineral mix, for her (since she's an older dog... five on Monday!.... and will tolerate imbalances of all sorts). I will email NB about a complete  nutrient profile. The puppy is eating both the canned and dry sweet potato and fish, and she's getting their biscuits. She also eats EP's new fish treats, and canned fish. I didn't think she could be too deficient in anything. She eats like a PIG! She's 11 lbs, now, and eats a cup of dry, a 13 oz can, and treats.... every day!

This has me wondering.  There is one park that if I take Mosby to it, he eats dirt every single time.  He never does it at the other park we go to.  Something in the dirt at the one park?  Should I be concerned about it?
