Rancid smelly kibble, first time ever: Solid Gold

Rancid smelly kibble, first time ever: Solid Gold

I do not know if it just coincidence but my last two bags of Solid Gold kibble, Just a Wee Bit, have not been good.  I have never had a problem before and have fed my cairn Solid Gold kibbles for years.  The first bag was fine until it was 2/3 empty then it smelled rancid and my dog had diarrhea.  I bought another bag and it smelled rancid upon opening it.  I bought these last two bags at two different places. My dog ate some and then had more diarrhea.  He refuses to eat it now and I do not blame him. I kept it on the tile floor in our kitchen cupboard where it is cool so it is not from me storing it.  His guts have been gurgly and for one day he did not want to eat any kind of food other than grass.  I have been giving him cooked chicken breast, yogurt, cottage cheese, and a little toast with real butter.  I have given him some canned pumpkin inside some canned EVO when he had the diarrhea episodes.  He is doing better except for major gut gurgles in the morning.

Any ideas?  Anybody else have this problem lately?  I'd welcome suggestions on a different kibble to try.  He did very well on the Solid Gold kibbles which is why I had stayed with it for years.  I also feed him the Solid Gold canned with no problems as well as Evo canned.

Any of the kibbles that have Omega 3's in them can go off because fish meal ultimately will go rancid.  Depends on how long some supplier has kept it before selling it (both stores may have gotten their stuff from the same supplier.)

I'd contact Solid Gold -- not just the store you got it from

I have a dog that is the epitome of not fussy - however he refused to eat a bag of Wolfking.  If I mixed it with his other food he ate the other kibble but not the Wolfking.  It didn't have a particularly bad smell but my dog who eats crumpled paper like it's treat would walk up to the bowl and walk away.

I called Solid Gold and was told I could send it in for testing but they did not have a guarantee on their food.  She just kept implying my dog just didn't like it.  Honestly I was not happy with their response ditched the bag and finished the bag of Barking at the Moon and moved on.

With allt he concerns about dog food in the last couple of years their response wasn't acceptable to me.  My dog has severe allergies and is limited in kibble selection but anything by them is not in the rotation.

I hope that if you do call them you get a better response than I did - let us know

If you are looking for another kibble and would like to stick with a bison formula, you may want to try Timberwolf's Dakota Bison formula---it has a similar nutrient profile to the WeeBits.  I know that Timberwolf is not a real popular choice on this board for various reasons, however I do know many dogs and dog owners that are very satisfied with the results they get.

You also may want to look into A Taste of the Wild High Prairie Formula---it is a bison/venison/lamb based formula--very nice.

I think Merrick also makes a bison based formula that you may want to check out, as well.

My dog has been having runny poops as well....so much so that I thought it was teh solid gold canned I always top her kibble off with. But maybe it is the kibble! I She has also had some itchies so we are in transition to Eagle Pack Salmon and Anchovy. Strange about Solid Gold all of a sudden.

Thanks, all, for the other kibble suggestions.  Threedogjeep, I feed the canned Solid Gold and have no problem.  I've been quite busy at work so I have not had time to call yet.  I did send an e-mail this evening.  I will try to call Solid Gold tomorrow.

I e-mailed Solid Gold last week, no response.  I called yesterday, explained, and then was put on hold for a short time.  Then I was told to give my phone number and that I would be getting a call back some time next week from a different person. The lady who spoke with me was friendly and polite. I will let you all know what transpires.

They could have had a bad batch of spray-on fat, used on most kibbles to enhance flavor and provide part of the kcal profile. Or the vit E was not up to par. Usually, the rancid smell is from fat. I never realized this until we switched to drinking organic fat-free milk.

I have not received a return phone call from Solid Gold; guess I will need to write them.  With my work schedule it is hard to call because of the time difference.

That's terrible customer service. I e-mailed them about a month ago asking for complete nutritional information for the Hunchen-Flocken Lamb and Rice Puppy formula and they sent it the next day, so I'm surprised that they're so slow in responding to you. By the way, I mixed a quarter cup of the lamb formula in Jessie's food to start transitioning her, and she woke me up at 2:30 and 6:30 the next morning to go out and had diarrhea. I waited six days and tried the same amount again, and the next day she wanted out to eat grass several times. Her stools were very soft for several days after that. I haven't tried it anymore and have decided to toss the bag instead of donating it to the shelter.

Okay, I know I'm late on this one, but when I saw the title of the thread, I had to check it out. I feed Solid Gold Wolfking, and the last two bags I've had smelled funny. I've been feeding this brand and variety for over a year, and my three garbage disposals eat anything that doesn't eat them. The first bag didn't give them any trouble, but I didn't put much thought into the smell because it wasn't rancid, just different. This last bag didn't smell until later, and all three of my dogs had diarrhea. I wonder what's the deal with the food.

I don't know, but since Diamond makes their food instead of making it themselves, maybe the quality control isn't as good. Jessie has a home cooked supper but DH feeds her kibble in the morning and the ingredients in the Solid Gold looked good. I've decided to stick with companies that make their own food and can trace the source of all the ingredients, like Eagle Pack.

I have to restock on food this week, so I think I'm going to switch to something else for a bit.

overall I tend to cut companies a lot of slack but with all the scares and then SG flat out saying they do not guarantee their food and just not making any attempt to appease the customer (my experience) it really put me off. These few other stories are now the final nails in the coffin. Good luck
