Bugs... Yum...

    Bugs... Yum...

Forgive me for my randomness, but in the wee hours off the night... morning I find myself wondering if anyone knows of insects/other creepy crawlers being fed to dogs?  Most bugs are high and protien, and low in fat, especially compared to other meat sources.  Just curious if anyone knows of any studies that have been done, or someone adding buggly wugglies to Fido's diet (outside of the odd insect caught eaten fresh from outside)?  I imagine some roasted bugs could make tasty, healthy, training treats if nothing more. Stick out tongue

Yes, I'm a strange one at times.

I've fed bugs to other animals, but never to dogs.  Ben confesses that he does enjoy the occasional tasty fly as a snack.

The aptly named Bugsy - enjoys bugs regularly.  His personal favorite are cicadas Stick out tongue

When I first discovered his appetite for bugs I mentioned it to our vet and he said he had a beagle that ate so many Japanese beetles it popped them!  He certainly said eating most insects was not a concern.  No reason not to give them as a treat I can think of............

Rex is our exterminator.  He hunts grasshoppers with real determination and precision.  He eats them and seems to really enjoy the smaller ones.  I encourage it as I don't use insecticides.

Ena likes crickets. A lot. I have to watch her. I have a couple of friends who have Bearded Dragons, and she'll pounce at their houses, trying to get their crickets. That's not nice, and Falcore defends his crickets, LOL.

I don't *feed* them, but she eats an awful lot of them.... She even tried for those GIANT Georgia grasshoppers, down by the river. When the bug is coming after you, you should run, not eat it, but nobody told her that.

One of my dogs, Roscoe, loves him some bugs! I'm actually absolutely terrified of moths (I know, it's so stupid :( ) and a smoker. Which means, I have to go stand on the porch a lot at night. Which means.... MOTHS. I know it's SO dumb but if they are on the door I can't come inside. I had to throw various work gloves and objects at them and hope I scared them off or smashed one. Not anymore! Roscoe is my champion! He jumps up and eats them when they flutter low enough, saving me the nervous breakdown. I also have tree frogs and a bearded dragon so have to feed crickets, which I am also not too fond of. If one gets out, Roscoe to the rescue! No more fear of having a moth in my hair or a cricket in my shoe. I haven't heard of any study about feeding insects to dogs but I have to assume it is a great source of protein.

I was thinking about that the other day. My brother mention a little boy on natgeo eating a tarantula and I got to thinking what nutritional value it had for dogs. Your not the only one Wink.

Sierra, strangely enough, only likes ants. No spiders, no flies, no bees or wasps, just ants. She will catch flies that are in the house, but spits them out & walks away. Same thing outside with bees & wasps (sigh.. she's going to get stung one of these times - she caught 6 bees this past summer). She spits them out by her feet and seems to pride herself for a job well done.

Ants, on the other hand, she eats like it's a free buffet. I've never seen any ill effects from it.

I just have to say that the fact that your friends have a bearded dragon named Falcore is awesome!   I love the Never Ending Story..LOL!

Bugs are non-fat high protein meals. Jade will eat bugs. Shadow will snap at one if it's bothering him.

Glad to see I'm not the only one then. XD

And interesting to here about everyone's dogs bug habits.  Kirby will eat spiders, but doesn't eat any of the other insects, though he likes to squash them by slapping them with one of his front paws.  Thankfully he doesn't fuss with my crickets unless one is loose though, because I have a twenty gallon tank with feeder crickets on the floor of my bedroom.
