Healthy toppings?

I give him eggs and he eats his food really well. I ran out of mackerel so I added 1/2 a can of peas and he gobbled his food. I think he likes the peas, I sure don't! I will have to make a list to take with me when I go shopping with my mom. I will have to check that place in Williamston to see if they sell the Diamond food.

Can I add canned fruit? Like peaches, pears?

Canned fruits have a lot of sugar.  If you have fresh fruits like slices of apples, papayas, and pineapples, they would be better.  By the way, papays and pineapples have a lot of good digestive enzymes for both humans and dogs.  When we were growing up, we would papayas every day, and that seem to help the tummy since we also eat a lof spicy food.

Eggs (cheap and complete source of protein), canned salmon/mackerel/sardines (make sure you drain the canned fish so that you don't give the dog too much salt), fresh fruits, and meats and organs used to make menudo (in our culture, we have something similar to menudo, but we use lamb/goat instead) would be good.  If I were you, I would also make sure to add warm water or broth to his daily meals.

Good luck.....I can relate to your situation.  I am embarrassed to admit it but my hubby is like most folks who think that kibble is all the dog needs.  If he could, he would buy 50lb Pedigree for $20 to $25 from Costco to feed our lab.  Thank goodness that will never happen (because I won't let it).

P.S. Do you have access to any Costco?  Costco's Kirkland brand of dry foods for dogs are about $22 to $23 for 40lb bag.  I do believe you will have to feed less amount using Costco (or Diamond) than the current brand you are using.

Is Maximum a good food to feed instead of Diamond (for right now)? I went to the closest town to me that is on the list of stores that carry it but it turns out they don't carry Diamond anymore because people are not buying it like they tought it would. They had Buddy Boy which I hate because Shailer did the biggest poop in the world with that food when my dad bought it one time, never again did I let him buy it. I will still suplement with fish, eggs, veggies, and fruits.

Maxximum Nutrition, from Walmart? The lamb and rice formula is pretty decent, if I'm remembering. It's similar to Purina ONE.

Personally, I would supplement with pretty much only meat or eggs and keep the fruit and veggies to a minimum.  There is enough vegetable matter already in the Purina, and it would be nice to up the meat content of your dog's diet a bit.

    He gets something every meal.
    Usually one of these:

    -Sardines (in water)
    -Canned Salmon
    -Steamed veggies (carrots, green beans)
    -Chopped apples
    -Gristle/scraps of meat
    -Sweet potatoes
    -Plain yogurt
-Canned dog food (whatever is on sale as long as it's "good";)

Hey there, I know where you come from. coming from a hispanic fam. scraps from the table is RARE! hahah I do suggest making food for him. Its easy and doesnt have to be expensive! I make meatballs for my dog and he loves it. Raw Hamburger Meat/Pnut butter/Olive Oil/Cottage Cheese the works... its simple, its fun, and it will gross out your parents!
