Canned fruits have a lot of sugar. If you have fresh fruits like slices of apples, papayas, and pineapples, they would be better. By the way, papays and pineapples have a lot of good digestive enzymes for both humans and dogs. When we were growing up, we would papayas every day, and that seem to help the tummy since we also eat a lof spicy food.
Eggs (cheap and complete source of protein), canned salmon/mackerel/sardines (make sure you drain the canned fish so that you don't give the dog too much salt), fresh fruits, and meats and organs used to make menudo (in our culture, we have something similar to menudo, but we use lamb/goat instead) would be good. If I were you, I would also make sure to add warm water or broth to his daily meals.
Good luck.....I can relate to your situation. I am embarrassed to admit it but my hubby is like most folks who think that kibble is all the dog needs. If he could, he would buy 50lb Pedigree for $20 to $25 from Costco to feed our lab. Thank goodness that will never happen (because I won't let it).
P.S. Do you have access to any Costco? Costco's Kirkland brand of dry foods for dogs are about $22 to $23 for 40lb bag. I do believe you will have to feed less amount using Costco (or Diamond) than the current brand you are using.
