All my dogs did great on Evo - even Ben was able to tolerate the Red Meat formula for short periods (he was sensitive to dairy). Back in the day, Ben and Bubo ate nothing but Cal Natural for years and the rest of my dogs ate Innova. Innova was a great food for my active dogs - I went straight from it to raw and struggled for a little while learning just how much my guys were eating!
I knew most of my working dogs ate a couple measuring cans of Innova and had never realized that it was about 1500 kcals a day. Ben ate three scoops of Cal Natural and a can of the old 95% meat, whose brand name escapes me ATM. Even Maggie in her heyday was a pretty big eater, though a very easy keeper. She was very active though and still used about 900 kcals per day. She stays in perfect condition on 475 these days!
Innova is a deceptively concentrated diet and I think a lot of people don't realize that. it used to be 580 some kcals per cup (I think? I could have that switched around). Cal Natural was my go-to transition diet when I could get it easily (I was part of a co-op and I got my order delivered because it comprised about a thrid of the whole co-op monthly order!).
CN is too low in protein and fat for both of my dogs, so that eliminates it as an option. I once tried the lamb and rice puppy CN for Wolfie, but it smelled like burnt bread (which is different from the adult CN smell), and he wouldn't touch it. EVO caused a handful of problems for Wolfie, and I wouldn't feed it to Falon because, well, she's not a working dog by any means and I don't want her having any more energy than she already does! Innova regular was fine for Wolfie I suppose, but he was only on it through a 4lb bag and I ended up switching to something else (don't remember the reason--it was awhile ago). I originally tried Falon on Innova (regular) and lets just say OMG gas + soft poos!! Even with an added probiotic she was causing me to gag! lol I would love to try Healthwise, but there is NO where remotely near me that carries it, and I'm not going to order food online if there are other options I can get around me.
Basically I wish they had:
-A lower-protein grain free option (in the EVO line)
-A higher-protein limited ingredient diet (in the CN line).
