How many Kcals in a cricket?

Stop laughing you guys! Those last 5 stubborn pounds have been clinging to Jewel even though the vet found nothing wrong with her bloodwork. She just recomends more exercise so I've been walking her around the fields and woods but she keeps snacking on these cricketsIck!.At least they're high protein, right?

Wasn't there a post not long ago asking how many kcals in a mole?  I think it was Bugsy's Karen, in fact.  LOL!

Five pounds is quite a bit on a dog so you probably need to pick up the exercise a bit to jump start things.  You might also consider, if possible (I don't know what you feed or for what reasons) switching up the type of food she eats.

In other words, if she's doing something with grain, go to a grain free geared toward weight control (the reduced fat versions).  If she's doing grain free and you don't have a reason for avoiding grain, try a senior formula of a high grade food (one with high protein and low fat).  If she's on a prescription diet, consider going to one of the above instead.

Always figure kcals carefully when switching to a new diet and then watch the results.  Sometimes you can get such a dramatic result that you end up overdoing the weight loss!

    hey - where's the answer ??? LOL

Unfortunately just a few kcals a day can make a huge difference ... my thighs know that for sure (can you say "cookie monster" !).    On the plus side, slow and steady wins the race so cut a few kcals a day, add a few kcals a day in exercise and the weight will slowly come off - which is MUCH better than adding even more on (I do hope my thighs are listening as well !!!).

I think you've coined another phrase - clearly Bugsy convinced you to see the world through his eyes, ie it's his world and we are all just passing through! Wink  ha that really made me laugh and yes I did ask about moles Big SmileAnd yes he believes I am his Karen not that he is my dog Smile

OP I think she'd have to be eating a whole lot of crickets to be getting significant kcals from them.  When I asked my vet about Bugsy's cicada eating habit he did say they are mostly protein and he told me about a beagle that ate so many Japanese beetles that he was pooping them out - cracked me up

I was not seriously concerned about the crickets, just thought it was funny and a little sad too that she has to resort to such a snack. We've been working on this for  about 5 months now.First with two 1 cup servings of Evo reduced fat [890 kcals per day] then reduced to two 3/4 cup feedings[about 670 kcals per day].She has lost significant weight and has started to RUN again which she hasn't done voluntarily in years but those last few pounds are tough. We do run/walk several times per day for 20 minutes or so but she is 10 so I am reluctant to over-do it.JoAnnDe,isn't that the truth about our metabolism? I work right next to a bakery which after a 10 hour shift on my feet might as well be a crack den.If I can make it to my car without cookies, cupcakes or a belgian pie it's a good day.I think staying a healthy weight is so much harder for older spayed labradors. Some breeds can eat and eat while others struggle with a very limited amount of food.It seems to me labs are particularly prone to obesity as well as beagles and pugs.I'm sold on grain-free foods. My dogs look, feel, and smell better now.Next fall is going to be tough. They will be planting corn next to our pasture/exercise area.I'll have to watch her like a hawk to make sure she doesn't raid the field for bonus cobsBig SmileAll in all crickets are probably not a bad snack. At least they don't carry fleas and parasites like rodents do.Thanks for the replies.

P.S. Also wanted to add, five pounds is alot of excess on any dog but she is 85lbs so it's not as significant as if she were say 50lbs.
