Stand from sit

    Stand from sit

Any tips on teaching stand from a sit?  Kenya can do a moving stand stay (as in, we are walking, I say "halt!", she stops in a STAND and stays standing there until I release her, so I can keep walking or walk around her), but she needs to be able to do a sit, stand, sit...etc.

The way I do it is: left hand on collar - my right hand comes across my body with palm just above dogs eye level.  (you fade the left hand on collar)  I have a visible cookie between two fingers on the right hand. The dog will stand up to stretch slightly forward to reach the cookie = and I reward that.

Another way to teach it is to have your dog come up to touch your left palm held over his head. He will naturally land in a standing position, reward that and fade the actual touch as he learns what you want.

I used the first method above: Luring from a sit to a stand....and that became the hand motion too.

If the above doesn't work for you, there are a couple other ways I've used.

Another lure, but this way is done by moving a treat backwards, not forwards.  You hold the treat in front of her nose, then move it down her jawline.  She'll probably twist her head, but just keep the treat positioned so that she keeps straight.  She'll eventually pop up her butt so she can move back and get the treat, then you can reward.

Another way is to simply wait for her to stand.  As soon as she starts standing, reward her.  Much easier with a clicker, obviously, but I'm sure its possible without one.  :)
