    Concerned about worms....

My husband and I recently picked up a stray where he works.  She was starving and no one claimed her, so we brought her home... He works at a coal plant and her natural coat is tan, but she was black as coal...lol so we named her Coalbunnie... We have only had her for about a week and a half and she has brought alot of joy to us, as have all our other animals... I took her to the vet this morning because for the past 3 days she has not ate or been active.. The vet thought she might have had parvo but it turned out to be whipworms... We began her treatment but I'm still concerned about her not eating.. any suggestions?  I'm giving her pedialyte by a dropper but she is so weak... I have to do something to make her better, I hate seeing her sick... The vet told me that was the only thing I could do until her antibiotics and worming medicine kicked in..but isn't there anything else I can do????

I would really push fluids.  Pedialyte is great, but, honestly, it tastes like crap.  If I need one of my guys to drink extra, I bait their water with chicken broth.  It tastes good & encourages them to drink a little more.

A bland diet of boiled chicken & overcooked rice is probably a good idea as well.

How is her color?  Are her gums nice & pink, or are they pale?

You now have whips in your yard (and honestly you never *ever* get rid of them -- you will simply have to test/treat your animals periodically for*ever*)-- do you have other animals currently?  Get ALL of them treated for whipworms.

Whips are nasty -- and very debilitating.  Particularly if the dog was to the point of LOOKING lethargic.

    1. Did the vet do some bloodwork to determine if she's anemic?  (either do her packed cell volume in house or send out bloodwork to determine her hematacrit?)  If you don't know **cal and ask**.

2,  You will need to help her build her blood back up.  Lots of fluids **but** give her food rich in iron.  Things like beef heart, beef liver, and even odd things like hummus (chick peas are super high in iron), green veggies (anything from romaine lettuce to spinach.

    3.  Is she nauseus?  (again, that can be a sign of severe anemia)

    4.  If she is still languishing tomorrow - it's not dumb to take her back to the vet -- whips can be far more serious than it sounds.  (I lost a dog to hooks and whips once).

Can I ask what the vet is treating with?

My lil Coalbunnie died this morning around 2:30 or 3:00...she had just been sick for a few days... How could this happen

I am SOOO sorry.  Whips and hooks ***both*** are vile, nasty, horrible, awful parasites.  they aren't 'worms' that's sort of a misnomer -- they are internal parasites that feast on blood.

Whipworms are literally little slender razor-blades.  They can make the dog unbelievably anemic (literally to the point of death).  Also -- when the medicine starts to kill them, there can literally be so many of them that the body just can't handle getting rid of them.

With the dog I had that had whipworm and hookworm, it was during a hot summer and I'd noticed he was a bit tired, but he was an old dog and it WAS hot ... but then one day when he didn't get up enthusiastically to greet me I knew something was wrong.  He collapsed trying to get in the house.  We raced him to the vet and the vet treated him.

Like with coalbunnie the vet thought he had a good chance, but he just didn't make it through the night,  These parasites literally cut them up so bad internally that the organs just sometimes shut down.

If you stick around here, you will find that many of us are incredibly quick to take our dogs to the vet.  For the simple reason that somethimes being off their food or being inactive or "lethargic" are teh ONLY symptoms you get of something really dire.

My heart breaks for you -- because I had the exact same thing happen with old Mike tha Dog.  That's why I posted what I did for you above -- and often vets just don't make enough of a big deal about this stuff.

I am so sorry.  But you might want to look at the Rainbow Bridge section of this website -- it may help you.  You can also visit http://www.rainbowsbridge.com -- it may give you some comfort.  *hugs*

Thank you so much that really means alot to me... I told my husband that the house was just too quiet now...because she would always run back and forth through the house... like she was getting her exercise in... and she literally would jump from the couch to the loveseat from me and my husband...It's hard to believe that animals can bring so much joy into your life yet if only for 2 weeks..I keep telling Shane that she was supposed to get better, but it saddens me to know that she didn't... I really appreciate your post, more than you know..and I too am very sorry to hear about old Mike..and thank you again..it was very thoughtful and sweet
