Siesures?

Gosh I know I probably spelled that wrong. xD But anyway - - my dog has been having siesures for a long time, but we dont know what causes it. I only just realized now that the siesures started a while after our dalmatian died (like a 2 or 3 years ago), and our dog never had siesures before that. She's pretty skinny - but she won't eat much, she really doesn't have any health problems that we know of that could be the cause of the siesures.... could it be hereditary? Could it be caused by the loss of our dalmatian? She knew that dalmatian since the day we brought her home from the breeder, which was a long time ago. She has the siesures pretty often, but sometimes they stop for a few months and start up again. They usually happen when she's been around another dog for a certain period of time. She's okay when she goes for walks and meets other dogs though... ?? Any ideas? Could she be lonely? I've never heard of a dog having uncontrollable siesures from loneliness though... and if her breed could have anything to do with it - she's a basset hound. Thanks, pups

Seizures in dogs can be triggered by any and all of the same things that trigger humans, altho some things can be even worse for dogs (like scents). Grief/stress - yes those can be triggers.

They can even be hereditary -- often those don't start until ages 3 - 5.

Stress is probably one of the biggest triggers. Anything from the excitement of playing hard with "buddies" to a family gathering -- or a grief- type event like losing a friend.

What do you do for your dog's seizures? My peke is seizure-prone and we control hers with acupuncture and Chinese herbs (I take her to a vet who does TCVM -- traditional Chinese veterinary medicine). It winds up being better (& cheaper) with less side effects than the regular medicines & blood tests can be.

Often the cause of seizures can't be determined but you can still successfully treat the seizures. Have you taken her to the Vet and described the seizures? Is she taking anti seizure meds? Several of our members can tell you about holistic support and I would encourage that too.
