I have a Samoyed puppy, born May 1st 2009. I picked her up from the breeder everything was fine, she was a great puppy for the 11 hour drive home.
Several days later she started urinating quite often, upwards of 20 times a day along with drinking 3-5 times her body weight in ounces per day of water. We took her to the vet, they ran some tests and found she had an urinary tract infection. I don't remember which kind, though they prescribed anti biotics for 7 days and asked us to come back to retest. A few weeks passed and no change so we took her back, blood work was done along with another test to show that she still had a UTI. The test came back showing she had a mild case of ecoli in her bladder, with the rests of her results as normal. This time three weeks of anti biotics were ordered. We go back to the vet for a checkup, she is still drinking massive quantities of water, ie... 64 ounces in one day, she weighs 23.4 lbs. They showed no bacteria in her urine, so they considered the UTI gone, though are trying to figure out other issues that could be causing this. Also her specific gravity of her urine has been 1.004, 1.006 and 1.007 when tested. This led them to believe it could be other diseases affecting the kidneys. I performed a water deprivation test for 23 hours and she was able to concentrate her urine to 1.031 and 1.033 with the two samples I took this morning. Also the breeder and the breeder she received her dogs from neither have any reported cases of something like this. We were believing it might be Samoyed Hereditary Glomerulopathy, though now not so much. Also we were thinking some forms of diabetes though the specific gravity of her urine along with blood test the vet doesn't believe so. Also there wasn't any excessive amount of protein in the urine, though there are other tests that are more sensitive that could try to determine if it is some other issue.
They are considering doing a kidney biopsy though I really hope there are other alternatives than surgery. She is a sweet dog and my whole family is worried sick about her. Any thoughts that could help would be appreciated.
