Chronic Heart Failure in older dog ...

Took Salem, one of the sled dogs to the vet today for a persistant cough. They did x-rays and she has a really enlarged heart, "funky" looking lungs (they should have been darker on the x-ray not as obstructed as they are), and growth looking things on her lungs or lymph nodes. The lumps could be cancer or just age related lumps, either way there's no reaosn to scope because we couldn't treat it surgically even if it was cancer. We're putting her on Vetmedin to see if it helps the heart and may re-xray in a few months to see if the lumps have grown. Any other suggestions? Anyone have any idea of the prognosis for this sort of thing? Poor bugger, this hit me out of left field, I thought maybe it was trachea damage or allergies causing the cough :(

She's a working dog and a lead dog at that ... one of our originals. She was a rescue found wandering down town Anchorage... she had broken her foot climbing out an 8 foot chain link fence to escape a place where many dogs died of malnutrition and disease.

Awe, poor Salem. I have no suggestions. Sorry, but I'll send Salem my prayers.

She sounds like a tough girl, how old is she?Does she have trouble swallowing? My Jewel is 11 and has had a swollen lymph node for over a year.It was aspirated and no cancer or infection was found but the node is as big as it ever was.I hope Salem does well on her meds and enjoys a long retirement.

Sorry to hear about Salem :( Tiki has heart trouble too, but she isn't taking Vetmedin (yet, LOL). I mostly let her go at her own pace - my vet said NO walks, but Tiki still WANTS to go so I just let her amble along as far as she wants to. Nothing compared to dogsledding!

Given the state of the x-ray -- did they check her for heartworm??  without knowing what's caused the problem in the lungs it's tough to tell.

That was my first thought, but yes they tested her and she was negative for HW.

My best to you and Salem.

My girl Babe developed this at 9 years of age. Hers was a side effect of a car accident at 10months.

She had enlarged her heart because her lungs were not working properly. (the vet suspected severe scar tissue) Because of her age and the fact that they had no real answer we tried a couple of drugs and curtailed her activity, especially in the summer. Cooler air is easier to breath and they pant less so she was not over working to much.

We did drugs for 18 months and then took them away, she hated them and did not understand why she could not play with the kids or chase her ball. In the end we decided  to let her go down swinging. If she died in the middle of running after her ball, or chasing a stray cat or bouncing around the yard we would except it, because she would die doing something she loved.

The accident that damaged her happened at 10 months, she literally ran full bore into the side of a moving pick up, with a full intake of breath her lungs took the most damage, she had drainage tubes and the whole works, spent 24 hours in ICU and then another week at home recovering. At one point that had to remove a 1/2 cup of blood from one of her lungs. The vet warned us it would prematurely age her and it did. But she was healthy, active and happy up until the age of 9, in the end hemangiosarcoma took her from us at 11 years and 10 months.

I would say this is manageable, depending on what is actually on the lungs.
