Gibbys limping

    Gibbys limping

    Hey guys...until I get to the vet.... is there something I can give to Gibby for what appears to be pain or stiffness either in his back legs or back end?      He was at day camp all day yesterday....seemed to be just fine....but now all of a sudden he got down off DH where he was sleeping ( AGAIN ) and is limping pretty badly..... DH said he did it earlier too.    He seemed fine all morning....and early afternoon.   I even took him for his walk....never saw any problems. So now I don't know if he did something..or is it from yesterday?    BUT....I know NOT TYLONAL...but I have Advil, Aleeve, Aspirin.....wonder if I can give any of these to him, thinking that it might keep it from being inflamed and thus give it a chance to go away.   I work on Tues..and will take him in to get checked ( unless he is worse tomorrow ) but she will give him Rimadyl...not sure how much I like that either.

    Aspirin may help him.  I did a quick search and it looks like between 5 and 15mg per 1lb of dog, every 12 hours.  I'd go toward the middle dosage and see if that helps him.  Aspirin can cause gastrointestinal irritation in dogs, like in humans, so watch for that. I read not to give enteric coated aspirin.  Callie will hopefully be able to advise on something to help with that.  Hope he's better soon.

    NOT ibuprophen or Aleve NEVER.  (pretty well as poisonous as Tylenol)

    You can give aspirin to a dog but I wouldn't give it to one with as iffy a tummy as Gibby has.

    I'd use either peppermint or wintergreen oil.  You could go to any pharmacy and get green alcohol -- yes, rubbing alcohol.  It has just a tiny bit of wintergreen (if you can get to Whole Foods and can get peppermint or wintergreen essential oils you can add to that and it's GREAT).  But massaging the leg and the shoulder is far better than aspirin that may hurt his stomach.

    My vet recommends Ecotrin for an OTC pain reliever (I buy the generic).  Not sure about the doseage for Gibby, but Mick (75 pounds) could have one twice a day.  I don;t have the bottle anymore, so I can't tell you the strength, but it was the "normal" strength, not extra strength.

    Gosh...I haven't figured out what to rub.

    Use peppermint or wintergreen oil by mouth???  Or rub him with it??    I tried to buy him something for pain the last time I purchased his probiotic supplement....but it ended up being something for humans... it wasn't liquid.

    I don't think I realized something like Advil was as dangerous as Tylonal...... I thought Tylonal was bad because it affects the liver.

    Ecotrin...... one of the few OTC medicines I have never purchased........ will look into it tomorrow though...thanks.
    You know...I have Rimadyl here left from Bubby..... I was supposed to give it to her when she was so sick...but it wasn't what she needed to make her better.... Gibby is about her weight. I am just not thinking I want to give him that either though.

    I'm pretty conservative with meds for both myself and the pets, but I've no issue giving my dogs NSAIDS on a short term basis for pain issues. A short term course is rarely going to cause a health issue.  I know I take meds when I have a headache without worrying about crashing my liver or stomach, so I view it the same for my furry kiddos.  That's just me though.

    I have always been like that myself....funny how for some reason I'm worrying more.   I do have Tramadol here....it was from Bubblegum...thinking I could use that too as he is about the same size. Actually thinking I wonder if its better for him than Rimadyl or OTC drugs.  I put a call into the vet.... she doesn't get in until 9 so they will call back eventually.   I can't tell if he is limping as much today or not....but he is favoring it for sure.

    My Brooke is a runner, she chases everything in my yard all day long.  One day she could barely move, she just stayed in her bed and when she did get up she limped terribly - obviously her hine end was sore.   Called the Vet he told me give her asprin and rest and to call him the next day if she seemed worse.  By the next day she was fine.   I think sometimes these hectic running dogs sprain a muscle, the asprin will help with the pain.  I would keep him quiet for a few days if possible.

    Thank you...yes TRY to keep him quiet.  It was fine until I wanted to put a little antibiotic salve on a sore he has....then he started running all over the place... Sad

     Dyan; I don't know much about pain meds but I hope Bubby feels better soon; {{{{hugs}}}}

    Thanks Janice........ he isnt' feeling too bad...but definately not walking right..   Then I gave him Tremadol that I had...dr. said its okay...... it probably affected him a little........but the bad thing is ( Callie was right ) he barfed about an hour later or so.  I did feed him lunch about an hour after that and he was fine though.......
