Sick Boston Terrier - 8 Months Old

     Hey everyone,

My dog has been pretty sick but I'm not really sure what to do.  I can't afford to take her to the vet for every little thing, so I just want to see how serious everyone thinks this is and if I can play it by ear.

My 8 month old boston has had diarrhea for 6 days (Wed-Mon thus far...some days worse than others, she hasn't pooped today yet).  On Sunday, I fed her breakfast and she threw it up about an hour later, and threw up again a couple hours after that.  I gave her some white rice to settle her stomach as well.  I went out for about 30 minutes and it appeared as though while I was out, she had pooped on the kitchen floor and then ate it......awful.  So you can imagine how much vomiting came after that, out came the rice. At that point she also had very water diarrhea.  This went on for a couple hours.  Before bed I took her outside one last time and she tried to make a bowel movement but all that came out was water liquid and what appear to be a small spot of blood (haven't seen any since). She made it through the night with no vomiting or diarrhea.  I did not feed her for 24 hours, at which point I gave her a very small amout of her regular food mixed with water.  She has not thrown up since Sunday night and her stools are getting much more firm-- only they are now an orangy colour (x2).  She got up at 5am this morning and had to go to the bathroom, and she usually doesn't get up at night but she likely had an upset stomach.  She is acting completely normal, and eating what I give her no problem.  Should I continue to slowly increase her food, or maybe change her diet somehow?  She seems to be improving, but I would love some opinions.

    Thanks in advance!

This is not "a little thing"  She needs the vet.  Immediately if not sooner.

No -- vet, absolutely as soon as possible.  Any time you see diarreha for more than a day or two, you need to vet her.  PARTICULARLY when you see vomiting and diarreha at the same time.  A pup can become horribly dehydrated quickly -- and puppies are SO prone to the really difficult diseases.

The off-color poop is a big indicator something is wrong.  Yes, you can let it go when a dog has abnormal poop for a day or two, but nothing like that many days

Especially with a pup, not feeding for 24 hours is dangerous.  Yes, it's what you'd do with an older dog, but puppies grow rapidly and really need FREQUENT feeding, so when something interrupts that it's pretty serious.  Just given that this has gone on day after day -- please vet her.

You know, a few years ago such symptoms might not have been scarey -- but in this day auto-immune diseases are pretty scarey and at times mysterious symptoms that go on and on can be the only heads-up you will get.

The orangey poop may simply indicate something like irritable bowel - but she's too young to want that to be the case and given that you saw blood, man, I'd have been at the vet Monday morning.

I'm hoping that the vet will simply tell you that you dodged a bullet but she should have rebounded FAR quicker and the fact that she hasn't would worry me seriously.  Diarreha and vomiting are debilitating.

Your "first aid" measures were sensible, but honestly she's just not bouncing back like a puppy should.

Well I did call an emergency vet on Sunday and they said it sounded like I was fine to wait it out.

Anyway thank you for a useful reply, I will call the vet now.  I'm only 22, it's my first dog, it's a learning process.

    Thanks again.

Got an appointment for this afternoon.

Also, I don't know if it was really diarrhea--- it was basically soft poops/some of it runny, only watery on Sunday night.  And the frequency of the bowel movements has been the same as usual.  Anyway, she's booked.

    Thanks.

You did the right thing to make an appointment for her at the Vet.  I know it's hard to know sometimes whether something is serious or just a passing tummy problem.  It's hard for us here to know how to advise you because we can't see the dog.  I always prefer to err on the side of caution.  It can often save you money and heartache to catch something early and begin treatment.   I hope it's nothing serious and that you can update us when you get a chance.  It is a learning experience with dogs.  I've owned dogs for most of my life and I'm old enough to be your Mom (I refuse to say old enough to be your Grandma, lol) but I am still learning new things about health issues and training, etc.

We'd love to see some pictures of your dog!  We are crazy about doggie pictures. Big Smile

I'm very glad you're taking her in. Prolonged diarrhea can be VERY serious. Lots of parasites make themselves know through lose and smelly stools. Diarrhea can cause dehydration, which left untreated can be deadly. I don't mean to scare you - but you're definately doing the right thing by taking her in.

That's why I said all the "first aid" stuff you did was wise!!   You don't know me yet at all (and we hope you stick around) but I do a LOT of "sick dog stuff" so if *I* say I'd be at the vet, that's kinda going some.  That doesn't mean you're crazy -- that means if, if all MY experience that *I* would be worried, then you aren't silly at all ... does that make sense?

And ... since it's your first you *wouldn't* know the kind of words to say to a vet to get you in when you're low on funds.  it IS a learning experience for sure.

Let us know, pretty please, how it works.  I absolutely love Bostons (my Mom had a boston when she and Dad were going together and I grew up on stories about Bostons!).

And btw ... we LOVE pictures (can you tell by looking around *grin*?)

    Hi!

Just got home and it's good news!  The vet said what she has is very common, puppies get it all the time, a gastro infection.  She said she likely picked it up from something she ate (Lemon tries to eat anything and everything). She gave me some special food and some antibiotics for Lemon.  And it all only cost $86!  I feel so much better and so will my little girl.

I think I have one picture of Lemon posted somewhere, but I haven't quite figured out how to work everything yet. I'll try and post some more.

    Anyway thanks again guys!

That's good news.  Thanks for letting us know.  You might be surprised how much we really do care about each other's dogs.

Glad to hear she's on the mend now!  My dog Willow has had lots of intestinal issues herself over the years.

That IS good news.  I'm glad you took her in though.  Clearly if she needed antibiotics, she needed to be seen.  Callie is always really good at explaining the why's of things.  She tends to take the edge off those of us who are not so good at it!

And yes, we really do care a great deal about one anothers dogs, and about one another.  I hope you'll stick around and discover that for yourself.

This is awesome!!  And yeah, Glenda is right -- if the dog needed antibiotics, then it truly DID need to be seen (such stuff can linger and get worse).  And honestly -- sometimes just building a relationship with a vet is priceless in itself!!

And I LOVE the name Lemon!!  You'll have to tell us how you decided on it!!
