I knew it was probably a bad idea but my poor Kobi was in need of a bath. The problem being - I normally bathe Kobi in the shower stall upstairs. He doesn't do tubs, even if I could lift him in. He is frightened of the hose after being squirted as a pup. He has become very crippled in the last few weeks and has not ventured up the stairs on his own. I phoned 2 local groomers and basically was told they could not accommodate a dog that cannot stand or sit for any length of time.
About mid day I finally decided to give it a try and get my now 90+lb dog up our long flight of stairs. I had to lure him with a hot dog and I supported his front end as best I could. Once upstairs he was fine getting into the stall. I managed to get his chest and butt (dirtiest areas) soaped up but he couldn't stand any longer. The rest of the bath I had to do with him lying down. The major problem was getting him back down the wooden stairs. His feet, unsteady at best, were now wet and were slipping all over the place. It must have been very scary for him. It seemed like forever as we basically slid on step at a time. By evening he was pretty much dried. I gently brushed him for at least 2 hours. He really seemed to enjoy that and he looked amazing.
So I don't know if I will be able to bath him again or not. I have fashioned a bib so when he eats and chews his bones he will not get uck all over his chest fur. I bought some dry shampoo to help keep him clean although it doesn't really do that good of a job.
I would appreciate any suggestions. Someone should start a grooming business that specializes in disabled dogs.
