So what do you think about this???

Yes its me writing about Gibby again. For those of you that have been reading about Gibby and his tummy....... heres another twist.  One that has been in the back of my head so it doesn't surprise me.

He has been great.  He is on kibble..Eagle Pack but not the formula he was on when he got sick.    I am still feeding him 3 times a day...and I am still feeding him cooked meat along with the kibble.  His stool has been firm and not all that big and is going twice a day...in the AM when he gets up and then the afternoon.   Kind of what he was doing before he got sick.    All is well.  Today I took him to "play day" at a day camp place.  I have taken him there a few times along with taking him to Camp Bow Wow a few times. The dogs play with eachother.  They can go outside in the large fenced area or stay inside...what ever they want to do.

So today Gibby went to Wag-on Inn and played from about 12:30 and we picked him up about 4:15.  He likes going there...I have a hard time not having him pull me inside.  He likes to come home too though...I can say. And he is tired as can be....sleeping right now as a matter of fact.  But I took him for a walk before dinner...and he pooped a nice firm stool as he has been...then took a few steps and strained some liquidy stool...then a few more steps and strained even more liquidy stool..........    THAT is what he did before he started with his diarrhea a few weeks back.     So while trying to watch for him to see if food is causing him problems....I know that diarrhea can be stress related.    I know he has fun there...he loves to go....but I think it could be too much for him???  I mean come on.................  lol!     I quess we'll see what will go on with him tomorrow.

Excitement can cause runny stools temporarily, but it would be odd for it to trigger chronic problems.  I've had a few dogs in play groups have accidents of loose stool after about 15-30 minutes of hard play and I know my own dogs' have slightly looser stool after a long hike.

    Thanks....thats good to know.

Actually as much as Gibby has a touchy stomach....he doesn't usually have diarrhea....he did a couple of weeks ago when he got sick...but before that he did not.

Is the water different from what you have at home where he was today (different well or water company)?  Another thought is the diarrhea could have been from drinking a lot of water when he was playing.

    • Gold Top Dog

Hi,,,thanks for for the thoght to answer.   You know..... never thought about the water and its a heck of a thought...the water would be different....I know they have a fountain running and the girl there said the first time he was there that it took him most of the day to figure out how to go and drink water there.  And if he was playing a lot..he sure could have been drinking a  lot of water.

    Dyan, how's Gibby doing?

    Dyan, how's Gibby doing?

Thank you so much for asking about Gibby, Sue.  Actually he is doing really well ( knock on wood ) I am feeding him EP Adult only, and using a topping of home cooked.  I am feeding him 2 cups 3 times a day and he looks like he might be gaining a pound or two....much needed...he has always been think and hard to keep weight on. Every time I try to feed him more...he seems to have a tummy problem.

Though.......here is another twist. I was cooking him ground meat with either white or brow rice. He had started doing a little scratching at his face..... and it seemed to me more and more. When a few people here said their dog had a problem with rice...I quit making rice and started potatoes.   He seemed to stop scratching.       But this week....I made him 3 # of chicken breasts with potatoes... threw in a little cooked macaroni.....and some baby food sweet potaotes.  Also added chicken gizzards and heart mixture.    He has been getting about 1/2 per meal starting yesterday.   HHHHmmmm noticed his stool seemed mucusy yesterday....... and today it is soft.  So..............wondering if this new home cooked is causing it. None of this is anything new...except when I cooked it before I used to add rice instead of potato.    I guess I will keep feeding it to him for a few days and see if he just needs to get used to it....or what.

I'm glad he's doing good. Smile  Maybe you can increase his food by some really small amount, like a half a handful at a time?  Or give him an "extra" meal of a handfull of food.  But you know what, lean is a good thing- better for not just the joints, but the organs and respritory system.  How long has he been getting the potato instead of rice?  I'm no expert, but I'd think that any new ingredient could cause some stool issue.  Maybe his system just needs a little more time to adjust to it.

Give that sweet boy a hug and kiss for me.

It seems like a lot of ingredients in the latest add ins. I think I'd give one thing as a topper at a time, if he needs one. That way you will know what's causing an issue.

I'm mean and my dogs rarely get toppers, and that's with only one of them getting the poosStick out tongue  They do get treats like raw foods once in awhile, but I'm very careful with what Aesop gets, as the poor guy gets the poos from everything.  Currently, while we're trying to resolve his poo issue, he's not getting any extras at all.

Dyan, I've read on here and other places that organ meats can cause loose stool, diarrhea, etc if they get too much for their system.  Willow just cannot do liver or any of that or she's a mess.

Thanks for all your suggestions and help.

First must say today Gibbys stool was just fine...and I hadn't changed a thing. I aske DH if he gave him anything "special" to eat...he said "no!"  I'll bet.

I know it SOUNDS like I added a lot of things in his topping..but really didn't. I had started him out on Chicken at the beginning of the bland diet when he was sick......somewhere changed to ground beef.....     I did take the rice out a few days ago...and added potato.....instead.   He probably had at least a week of potato.    But Lori...you might be on to something with the gizzard and hearts.....I always put them in his meat that I make...I added more this time though. But again....today his stool is fine both times that he went.

Oh and Sue...I have him TWO hugs and TWO kisses for you...is that alright??? Wink

Glad Gibby's better.  That got me thinking- maybe his system just needed to get used to the change.

Dyan, you can give that boy of yours all the hugs and kisses from me that you'd like!

    Update.

I have been keeping Gibby on one food only after his last bout of runny stools....he has been fine...and thank goodness hasn't had a vomiting episode in a long time ( knock on wood ) but the past few days he has started his soft stool thing again...with the pale color stool.....   last night it was pretty runny when he asked to go out after 9 PM..something he does'nt do. This morning he still went again...the end of it was runny.   Dh brought up something...we stuff bones with treats ( dog treats ) and a little peanut butter and things like that. One thing we also put in is  about a half of hot dog...  not cooked...just cut up.  I do'nt know....wondering what you guys think.    It started softening up a little last week and I wondered if it was from putting a can of sweet potatoes in his meat that I use for a topping...about 3/4 cup of cooked meat with s.p. and some cooked carrots in it.   Thought maybe too many veggies.....but then yesterday he didn't get any of it at all and had trouble last night.....thats proabably why DH thought of the hot dog.

Well...off to the store to buy some more meat to feed him with rice.

Oh, geesh, Dyan- sorry Gibby's haveing trouble again.  His soft stool could be from the sweet potato.  Even tho he didn't have any last night- it could still be the culprit.  My experience has been that it could take a couple of days for stool to get back to normal.  It could also be the hotdog or peanutbutter, too.

I think I'd cut out all of the bone/Kong filling foods if his system is that sensitive.  Aesop gets no canned or soft food, as it generally ends up with some sort of poo issue....be it soft, too frequent, etc.  He doesn't seem to mind.  In fact,  he rarely gets extras of any type, aside from raw bones once in awhile. And if he needs a pill, we hide it in string cheese...which we've discovered doesn't bother his digestive tract.
