    Weirdo color change

Has anyone had this happen to their dog's coat?

Every spring, on Oliver's rear left flank, a patch of hair turns noticeably lighter - to a medium/dark brown.  The patch of hair and the skin underneath all appear to be quite healthy.  He doesn't scratch at it nor does it seem to bother him.  The patch seems to darken back up in the fall.  He is a lab mixed with something (SPCA rescue).  Any ideas on what is going on?  Other than maybe his summer "highlights" coming out?  Big Smile

My friend's Boston is doing that. I thought it was dead hair so I tried to pull it out but nope it just lightened!

No but Bugsy gets some more significant brown patches on his head and one shoulder in the warmer months. He is a very dark brindle and for some reason those spots get very brown versus black at times. Just a curiosity of a mutt :-)

I have seen that pretty often in short-haired dogs with hypothyroidism.  That is, aside from the color changing back in the fall... that's weird.

sun can lighten your dog's coat, but it's usually dogs that are outside all the time, and I seem to see a correlation with dogs who are out in/on the water all the time.

How old is your dog?  Has he gained any weight?  Do you find his hair falling out somewhat more than normal?
