    Help!!! (BlackLabbie)

So...Apollo was sleeping about an hour ago on his dog bed and he got up and just started- out of nowhere- whimpering/yelping...he's been doing it on and off ever since. We did nothing today except lounge around (no fetch, no running, no swmming). He has no cuts, no thorns/bures, he's not limping or even showing where he's hurt. His ears are clean, not infected. I can grab and squeeze his paws with no problem, rub him roughly all over with no problem. He ate and drank normally all day, poop/pee was normal, too. Any ideas????

Gas?  Try simethicone (Gas-X, etc) and probiotics.

I have no ideas but I can imagine how scary it must be for you. Let us know what you find and I hope Apollo feel better soon.

I would take him in if he's in pain and especially if you can't find a reason.  I'm hoping it's nothing but I'm the type to err on the side of caution.  Good luck and keep us posted.  Hugs.

See if he can settle down and sleep -- you think it's physical rather than him hearing something that startled him?  Has it increased or decreased since he's been awake?

Open his mouth and look at his gums -- are they pink as they should be?  Take your fingertip and press hard for a few seconds and then release and see if the color fills RIGHT in.  (If not or if the gums are white VET NOW)

How long ago did he eat?  Is there any hardness or discomfort in the gut?

Rubbing them roughly isn't likely to show a particular sore area, but feel the body over slowly and gently as a 'petting session' but feel for tension that's abnormal in the body.

I am so scared....I have a million things running through my mind right now........

I don't think its gas, at leash he isn't gassy.

He's laying on his dog bed right now, but is awake. I don't think anything startled him. The wimpering/yelping (as if hurt) has been the same, just on/off, seems to be coming out of nowhere.

Gums are pink. When I press down the area tuns white then pink really quick.

He last ate at 6:00pm...went pee and poop at 7:00pm and pee again at 9:00pm. His gut was soft/normal, I can squeeze it/push down on it, not problem, no discomfort or tension.

He seems to be OK everywhere. Maybe a little tension in his neck/chest, but I'm not sure if it's real tension or not. He's just putting his ears back when I rub him there, but, he sometimes does this anyway.

Bad dream?? I might take him to get looked at -- it's worth the $$ for the peace of mind sometimes.

I was thinking of bringing him into the e-vet.....but, since they really will only stabilize an injured/sick dog, I was thinking of waiting....it doesn't seem to be an emergency (right now)- he's not bleeding, vomiting, limping, his gums are pink, breathing is normal, poop/pee is normal, he's alert (when awake)....he's sleeping right now, and seems fine.

Our regular vet won't be open until Monday, so if this keeps up I'm going to bring him in. If it gets worse he's going to the e-vet.

Anyone else experience something like this?

No ideas. Just wanted to say that I hope the big boy is feeling better quickly.

DH and I looked Apollo all over again.....and guess what??? One ear was bright pink had a light foul smell- ear infection. Neither of those symptoms were there last night! He was shaking his head last night but I brushed it off because, well, sometimes he does that. We used some Virbac Epi-Otic and I gave him some ear drops from the last time he had an infection. I'm going to call the vet Monday, see what they say and if they think I should bring him in.

Sounds like ear mites, which often leads to a secondary infection.  Treat the mites AS WELL as the infection, or the infection will recur Smile

I'm glad you found the problem.  I was worried about your big, beautiful boy.  Definitely agree that you should call the Vet Monday.  You might want to ask about drops to put in his ears after he's been swimming since he goes to the beach so often.

    • Gold Top Dog

I'm glad that it's nothing serious!

I totally agree with Jackie about looking into flushing his ears after swimming.  Our guys are in the water daily.  We use a ear wash made for swimmers after each swim in the lake.  Since we started using it, we have had no ear infections.

Poor Apollo!  At least you have narrowed the problem to his ears.  Can you call your vet today to talk; and then take him in tomorrow.  If not, call and talk to the eVet.  I do that sometimes when needed and depending on who is working....can get some good advice.
