Bevo has Bumps...*Updated*

Oh Amanda - I hope everything is OK.  We are so thinking about you guys.

Casey gets those.... it's an allergic reaction to something in the grass that breaks out into a staph infection. We just do a bath of chlorehexdine, and it clears right up. He doesn't seem bothered by it at all.

This is what happened to Kenya.  It started out like that, quite a while ago.  At the time, I attributed it to either a diet change, summer contact allergies, or some chemicals that were accidentally put on our lawn (the man did the wrong house!).  I checked them for a while and they never really got bigger, she never itched, so I kinda forgot about it.  Then a few weeks ago she rolled on her back and I found a horrible rash.  Again, she was never itching or acting different and she's not a belly rub kinda dog, so I never knew.  I gave it another week b/c I wasn't sure if the two things were related.  When that didn't get better we went to the vet and he immediately diagnosed it as a staph infection, not sure what caused the original break out.  Kenya's rash is well beyond the little acne-like pustules so she has been on cephlex (3x a day, 14 days) to kill the staph and allow the rash to clear.  It seems to be clearing and the skin is turning white again, the rashy areas are flaking off.  I want to bathe her SO bad but the vet said to wait.  Being a large, double coated breed that takes an hour or more to dry even with a high velocity dryer, moisture will make the infection worse so no bathing or swimming.  The vet said what happens is the pustules break open and then the skin around it reacts to the staph.  That's why on Kenya they look like large, dark circles.  I originally suspected ringworm b/c DH has chronic ringworm and the vet said it was a good guess, but definitely staph.

A little over a week ago

A few days ago (the bumps appear raised but are not, the only raised bumps are nipples)

It looked more like Bevo's bumps when it first started.

(note, the flash on the camera makes it look worse than it really is)

    Thanks guys.

I dropped him off at the vet's office this morning.  After talking with Bev's neurologists, we decided to go ahead & biopsy some of the lesions.  He decided to act like a jerk, so I had to leave work, to go help the vet tech get him out of his kennel, so that they could get him under anesthesia.  I got him out, & held him so that they could knock him out.  The vet took samples from three different lesions, & will send them out for analysis tomorrow.  He's still drunk, but he is home with us, & resting comfortably.

Karen, while I was mumbling under my breath about having to go get him out of the kennel, I gave him an ear rub from you.  He appreciated the ear rubs.

Callie, he is on a big dose of prednisone (70mg twice a day, for now)  so it may be an issue with the pred.  He got a half-hearted attempt at a bath with an antiseptic shampoo this evening.  (He's still too drunk for me to be able to keep him up on his feet, & to clean him very well.)

He has never had any type of skin issues before, so I don't think that this is an allergy.  I could be wrong...

For now, while we are waiting for biopsy results, he has been started on Baytril.

Willow's had some secondary skin infections from Prednisone too so not completely impossible that this is something like that.  Willow has even lost most of the fur on her muzzle.

Baytril is one of the meds we had Sassy on also. We'd started out with cultures/sensitivities on the area and it'd come back as staph, pseudomonas and a few other nasty things. I remember them saying that they doubted they'd need to sedate Sassy to get the punch biopsies and I told them to err on the side of caution and I didn't want her stressed out. Sure enough, they changed their minds very quickly. I think we got the results back in 2-3 days. I truly hope that this isn't anything to worry too much about. Just wanted to add that Sassy wasn't on Pred at the time nor had she ever had it since we'd had her, so it wasn't related to that in her case.

We got results back from Bevo's biopsies this evening.  He has impetigo, which is a puppy disease that, apparently, happens with adult, immunosuppressed dogs as well.  He's already on Baytril, & we will be starting medicated baths tomorrow.  I'm really happy that it's minor.

    Luvmyswissy, you called it!

    What good news Amanda!!

I have 3 kids and seen some impetigo and that's what my first thought was.. it looks exactly the same on humans. I had no idea if dogs could get it, so I looked it up and passed what I found on the internet.  Well...  glad its nothing serious - Bev doesn't need that now!!

Whew! Sorry I missed this, but I'm glad it's something minor. Yay!

I'm so happy to read it's nothing serious.  The Prednisone causes some strange skin eruptions thats for sure.

I'm glad to hear this news. You were way overdue for something "minor". Big Smile
