    The goopie eye disease (sigh)

Pirate's got an eye funk. Lately both eyes have been crustier than normal but it IS allergy season so it hasn't bothered me. Lately tho I've noticed his left eye is squinty - he'll actually close it when he's 'resting' somewhere but not sleeping. When we got up this morning it had a big green goopie - gross. It looks like he's got a little scrape on the bottom so maybe that's making him uncomfortable? Neither eyeball is too 'red' or irritated looking though. This dog is a mystery.

Sigh. I didn't want any money in savings right now anyway. I guess I'll get to meet Dr. B sooner than later, Callie!

Whole Foods MIGHT carry this -- I've been using "OccuHeel" by -Heel -- it's a homeopathic eye drop and wow ... it has helped Billy MORE than the cyclosporine eye drops he gets for the dry eye and it's battled the allergy eyes incredibly well.  I was adamant I didn't want to use the cyclosporine (don't ever wanna use ANY of that any more ... not even eye drops!!)

It comes in little individual pipettes BUT each one has probably 8 drops in it which does Billy for two days -- I just stand it up in something upside down but in 2 days it won't spoil and it stays ok that way (and Dr D told me it was ok to do that).

Dr B is only in NSB on Mondays and Fridays -- Tues - Thurs he is in Deland.  He's got another vet over there mid-week.  I've never met her but I know of other of his patients that drive to Deland JUST cos they like him best.  I need to get you his number tho ... will do.

But give the OccuHeel a try - it's good stuff.  You'll have to call around and find someone who carries it if you aren't gonna be near Whole Foods tho.  Not everyone carries the Heel brand.

My Shari suffered from KCS (chronic dry eye) beginning around age 3 until she died at 15.  Yeah, it starts like regular goop, but left untreated, you get that really green stuff.  I can't remember all the detail, but know I have the info at home somewhere (never know when you might need it).

I wish I'd known about OccuHeel because after a while, the cyclosporine didn't work well any more.  Besides, it(cyclosporine) leaves the eye(s) more open to other infections.  Shari had it worst in the left eye, which she ended up losing about 1 1/2 years before she passed.  I even had her at Michigan State to see a doggie ophthalmologist a couple of times.  I, too, spent a lot of money at the regular vet because of it.

If only I knew then what I know now...Huh?

I will have to get some for Max. She has one I that gets "goobers" our vet thinks it is age related dryness. If I can make her more comfortable I am all for it. I have dry eye in my left eye I hate it.
