Swallowing hard

Dyan, I don't know.  Willow tends to swallow, lick, gag and breathe heavy when she's nauseous.  Or, sometimes she's having that empty stomach acid issue and she will also do those things--because of course she doesn't understand why she feels that way. 

 But, did you get him from a breeder?  Maybe ask them if they recognize these symptoms at all?  He's very young to have this many issues already. 

Just a random thought, but are you giving him chicken?  Willow has such issues with it.  I stopped the chicken and MOST of the stomach/intestinal issues have stopped.  It's quite an inflammatory meat from what I've read.  Any tendency to have issues and chicken could set it off. 

I hope he's OK.

Swissy's are notorious for having something we Swissy owners refer to as the "Lickies".  River often starts to pace and lick or eat everything!  He is obviously agitated and can't seem to comfort himself.  I always give about 7 Tums, take his bed out of his crate, crate him and let him go thru the motions until he settles down.  If I didn't do that, he would eat everything from rocks to lick the floor and consume larges amounts of dog hair.  That is why we crate him - I believe and so do others its all about gas and the way they handle it.  I have heard of some other large breed dogs having similar issues with gas.  The next time he does that swallowing thing see if some gasX or a couple of Tums don't help him.  This dosen't happen all that much anymore since he is older but when it does I feel so bad for him.

I haven't noticed gas with with Gibby hardly at all. I know Ollie used to have gas issues, believe me you knew it, lol.     I do make sure to have Pepcid on hand for him.

Lori... after trying to feed Gibby different formulas of his EP,,,I have finally been convinced that it doesn't work for all dogs....so settled on the one that he wasn't having problems with...and have stuck just with it and we have had no problems since...except for this episode. That formula is Chicken based.   And in the past when I put him on bland diet...it was chicken and he recovered from his problems on it.  I have been making him ground beef for bland lately only this time I did make him cooked checken thighs and rice.  

Do you think that if it was Chicken he would have gotten over this while eating it? It started Thursday afternoon, by Fridays he had diarrhea and by Sat. everything was fine. Today he is back on kibble.    I "talk" ( by email ) to Julie... Gibbys breeder lots.  We just had a conversation about their size and all....she has his brother, keeping him to show but can't because he didn't grow as large as they thought.  Over the past, he has shown no health issues.....and she gets mad at me for not feeding Gibby like she does.................. ( get this........... ) Pedigree!

I don't know if I wrote this or not...sorry if I did but the way this format is set up its too hard to go back to read thru once you start replying....but a girl on the Great Dane Forum says her dog does this everytime there is a full moon.......   and there was.  Thought THAT interesting and will watch that one for the fun of it.

Believe it or not Dyan, one vet told me that the change in barometric pressure could possibly do it too!  I don't see those patterns here though, mostly chicken related.  And, sometimes completely cannot explain why she's having flare ups. 

I'd tend to think if chicken was a problem for him or rice he wouldn't get better.  Willow never did.  So, that's probably not it for Gibby. 

Was he stressed out for some reason.  Like you guys were out more or did someone come over, etc?  It could even be a good stress, not like he's upset but anything that excited him?  That could do it too.  Willow will have flare up's every so often over the cats getting attention.  I have to hide and give them attention, LOL.

Wow Lori....I never even pay attention to things like barometric changes....  but just this morning I remembered to add this bout of WHATEVER to my thing I keep on the computer.  Not long after I got him I started a page in my documents...and put a link on my desktop trying to keep any health problem on record with the date and what I noticed or did about it. Unfortunately I think I missed a lot of it but am trying to remember to write about every episode. I just added your info about barometic changes along with the girl that said her dog does this on a full moon. Can't hurt to watch these things.

Just this morning I started thinking about the stress part..funny you should be here mentioning it to me.   I say this because Gibby was fine yesterday as far as stool firm again and isnt' sick, but DH and I went to Heritage Days in our city...only gone about an hour or so..but we did not barricade him...last night when he CRIED to go out...his stool was soft and runny again. And this morning it is fine.  Thinking about it this morning when he was fine.... wondering if it was stressful for him to leave. We do leave him a lot, but honestly because DH is retired, not as much as a lot of dogs get left.   IF we are going to be gone longer..we barricade him between the laundry room and our bedroom...been doing this since we realized that it just to hard on him to be in a crate.  But we are trying to leave him out without the barricade more and more if we can...so if we just run someplace for a short time we just leave him. He sits in the front window and watches us leave...and is still there when we come back home.  DH a lot of time says "lets try leaving him longer" but I feel its less stressful to barricade him...he just takes his bones that we fill... and eats what he can and then goes to sleep on the bed.  BUT, can't say there was anything going on to stress him at the beginning of this whole thing...it started during the week when nothing was going on.

He only did it for a day...its all gone now....I have'nt seen him swallow anything but regular. THANK GOODNESS.   

I took a hard plastic ball away from him this morning that he was able to bite pieces out of.......just wodering if possible a piece was stuck...but that does not explain why he did it after eating his supper.
