    Golden Retriever with dandruf

We have a Golden Retriever that is five months old.  She has white flakes on her skin that resembles dandruf.  The vet told us to use oatmeal shampoo for dogs, but that doesn't seem to help.  She did have parisites in her stool, and the vet thought that might be the cause, but that has since cleared up, and she still has the white flakes.  We are feeding her Eukenuba dog food for large breed puppies, and the vet thought that this might be a cause.  Has anyone encountered this problem, and how have you treated it.  Just one last thing to add... she doesn't seem to be itchy or scratching.  She just develops these white flakes, especially on her back.

I use Nu Sal T shampoo on my lab, and the first reason I started using it was because of her dandruff.  My lab is black, and it would look like someone had dumped tiny snowflakes on her back.  It was really bad.  This shampoo helped the most.  She's developed other skin problems and we continue to find this shampoo helps the most.  My husband thinks we could be using Selsun Blue instead, and he may be right, but for now we use the Nu Sal T [:)].

Fish body oil also works wonders, for dandruff. My red Dachshund had pretty awful dandruff, when I got her. When my JRT was a pup, she had some pretty bad dandruff, too. The vet told me to go buy her some fish oil. Worked like a charm:)

I also have a black lab and he would have dandruf. I started to feed him Beneful Healthy Radiance and his coat shines. I was talking to my vet and he said a food with high protein and fat will help with the flaky skin and if your dog is active the higher protein and fat will help them. My labs get a mix of the beneful and a brand called Maxium. It helps keep there weight good for hunting

That food is utterly disgusting. Look at the ingredients list, and find the "real salmon". You won't find it.

10 years ago, when I put my puppy on Eukanuba, she went bald
in 6x8" patches.   I then switched her to Nutro because the rep told me about the fatty acids (omega 3's) she needed.  Yes, her hair did grow back on Nutro.  I now use even better food like Innova, SOlid Gold.

SO yes, fish oil, or salmon oil would be great for dandruff.  I have my puppy on fish oil for her brain development. and Innova Puppy food.

And regarding Purina Beneful - my mom;s dog got a lick granuloma (licked her paw raw) from eating it.  I switched her to Flint River Ranch and her paw healed up.  When she was converted her over, mixing half Beneful and FFR, the dog would spit out all the colored Beneful kibbles. she hated it and caused my mom needless vet bills !

My golden hasn't had the flakes but has always been itchy. When I spoke to my girlfriend/vet about this specifically she asked what we fed and we were told to change her food. What we fed had a high corn content, which I also added corn syrup (it was great for my horses coat). We changed to a food with little to no corn, and added "Missing Link" supplement (lots of Omega 3 fatty acids). My dogs coats absolutely glow now. We also use one of my horse curry combs on them to loosen dirt and hair as it does on a horse. It also is a natural skin oil stimulant. Maxine (my golden) LOVES it. My lab... hates to be brushed PERIOD! Both dogs coats are amazing, and right now they are both FILTHY.

Another thing I have been told, is to be careful not to give too many baths. It can strip the skin and coat of essential oils that are there for protection. I can use that as my excuse for not giving a bath since July[8|].
