    Anal Problems- AGAIN (BlackLabbie)

OK, last night- in the middle of the night- I woke up because I could *hear* Molson licking away at something. I knew it was Molson because Patty was sleeping w/ me under the covers and Apollo was upstairs on the couch, Molson was on the dog bed in our bedroom. I just shrugged it off, he was wearing a cone (for hotspots) and sometimes he licks that. Well, I took the dogs out for a potty and walk this morning, everything was normal (normal poops, no scooting). When I got back in, about 2 mins ago, I noticed Molson's anus was dirty looking and red and puffy (again). I got baby wipes and cleaned it and, yep, he did have some traces of poop stuck on his anus. His fur is super buzzed down around that area, the poop was on his actual bum hole (sorry, I know, TMI) and it looked like sand or dirt. Well, Molson was laying down and I heard that licking again, I turn around and Molson is sure enough licking his bum, well, he was trying to like crazy because he had the cone on. I called our vet to ask what's the deal w/ the licking and what's the deal w/ the poop, the receptionist said a tech will call me back later (they were very busy). Any ideas?

I feel so bad for poor Molson. Patty & Apollo literally have no health problems or food issues (knock on wood) and it seems like Molson's getting it all. Sad

I lost track last time on what the vet actually DID.  Did they rinse out the anal glands?

Mostly I'm rambling here --  seriously -- you may want to call me and I'll tell you how to express those glands.  For some dogs I've had that was the ONLY way to keep it all under control.

If you're feeding an ultra high quality food, he may simply need MORE fiber.  (which is why they started putting things like peanut shells in dogfood aeons ago -- it wasn't just to be cheap -- it's always been known dogs need a certain amount of fiber to empty those glands)  We humans want to clean up smaller poop but a lot of dogs just can't handle it.

The other possible is that he could have something like a perianal hernia -- he's neutered right?  (if they were neutered super late that can cause a hernia there)

An infection in those glands is not unheard of -- poor guy -- it's likely VERY sore and they can even get a prolapsed anus (which is also very painful -- and then you kinda have to "help" them).

cockers *sigh* -- they can be high maintenance (looking lovingly at my Billy's picture)

When we brought him in (not very long ago, *sigh*) he needed his glands expressed and cleaned out and his bum was chaffed due to scooting and excessive licking in that area. They said there was no infection present then. All was well until today. He's eating Orijen 6 Fish and I started adding canned pumpkin (the real thing, not pie filling) to his food to boost his fiber. He was neutered at 5 months old, so pretty young. He's going back to the vet tomorrow afternoon.

This is just a suggestion that can't hurt and might help, but try feeding raw carrots and see if it helps. Sassy used to have terrible anal gland problems but not at all since we started feeding the raw, usually frozen, carrots. I can only assume that the fiber keeps things moving.

The thing about pumpkin (and metamucil) -- a certain amount adds fiber -- a wee tiny bit too much and you've got "diddeee rear".  *sigh*  Meaning -- there's an almost invisible line of how much is enough.

Try other veggies.  green beans (frozen french cut ones work great), I cook white potato and sweet potato -- peel neither.  Just chop up fine enough so that the skin stays in pieces not too huge to digest (or you can use one of those dreaded inventions called a food processor -- Callie making a cross of two index fingers LOL) and then I cook and mash it.

I like Cathy's idea of the frozen carrots -- it makes a treat out of it.  They don't chew it enough to process it enough to get real food value -- but it's just plain good bulk there.
